Overview
Nearly 1.25 million Indian students were studying overseas as of January 2025, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. If you are one of them, once your admission and visa are sorted, another question usually follows: what insurance do you need?
Buying a policy is easy. Buying the right one is not. A brochure may describe a benefit, but it applies only when your policy schedule lists it with a valid limit. Moreover, a plan that satisfies your visa requirements can still get rejected by your university.
This guide breaks down what student travel insurance actually covers, what it does not, and how to pick a plan your university will accept.
What Is Student Travel Insurance?
Student travel insurance is a policy sold by Indian general insurers for students enrolled in full-time courses abroad. It combines overseas medical cover with travel protection and education-specific benefits, such as study interruption and sponsor protection.
You pay the premium in INR, but your cover is in dollars (USD). The biggest difference from a regular travel insurance plan is the duration. A normal international policy runs for 180 to 360 days. A student plan can run from 1 month to 2 or 3 years, to match your course length.
Note: A student policy is not the same as your university's own health plan. The two solve different problems, and we cover that difference further down.

Coverage and Benefits Under Student Travel Insurance
Emergency Medical Expenses and Evacuation
Covers hospitalization, surgery, diagnostic tests, doctor visits, and emergency medical evacuation following a sudden illness or accident. Cashless treatment usually requires prior approval from the insurer’s assistance provider.
Pre-Existing Disease and Personal Accident Cover
Routine treatment for pre-existing conditions is generally excluded, although some plans cover life-threatening emergencies up to a sub-limit. Personal accident cover pays a fixed benefit for accidental death or permanent disability.
Study Interruption and Sponsor Protection
Study interruption can reimburse non-refundable tuition if you cannot continue your course because of a covered medical or family emergency. Whereas, sponsor protection can cover unpaid tuition if the named sponsor dies or becomes permanently disabled due to a covered event.
Compassionate Visit
Covers a family member’s round-trip airfare if you are hospitalized abroad for the minimum period stated in the policy. Some plans also cover your travel to India if an immediate family member becomes critically ill.
Personal Liability and Bail Bond
Covers eligible legal expenses if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property. Bail bond cover usually applies only to bailable offenses and may have strict repayment and notification conditions.
Passport and Baggage Loss
Covers the cost of replacing a lost passport and compensates you for delayed or lost checked baggage. Limits may apply per bag, item, or claim, so review the policy schedule carefully.
Eligibility, Age Limits, and Countries Covered
Most insurers cover Indian residents aged 16 to 35, though this varies by product, and you generally need to be in India when you buy the policy. Some insurers do allow cover for students already abroad, but approval is not guaranteed, and pre-existing conditions remain excluded.
No medical test is usually required, though you must honestly declare any existing condition.
Plans are typically sold in three zones: Asia-only, worldwide excluding the USA and Canada, and worldwide including the USA and Canada. Your destination determines which zone you need, which directly affects the premium.
Student Travel Insurance for the USA, the UK, and Other Countries
USA: It is not a legal F-1 visa requirement, but almost every university insists on proof of insurance before you can register. Medical care in the USA can be expensive, so carefully compare the medical limit, deductible, and sub-limits. J-1 exchange visitors do have federal minimums of at least USD 100,000 per illness, USD 50,000 for evacuation, and USD 25,000 for repatriation of remains.
United Kingdom (UK): You already pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, currently £776 (USD 1,000) per year for students, which provides access to the National Health Service (NHS). It does not cover everything, though, so a student plan still helps with dental care, study interruption, and sponsor protection, none of which the NHS offers.
Canada: Provincial health coverage can have a waiting period of up to 3 months for new student arrivals. Your student plan fills that exact gap, and requirements vary by province and institution.
Schengen Countries (Germany, France, and Others): A visa-compliant policy with at least €30,000 (USD 34,000) in medical cover is mandatory for the visa itself. Germany separately requires that you obtain locally recognized health insurance once you are enrolled.
Australia: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC, Subclass 500) is mandatory for your student visa and must remain active for your full visa period.
How to Choose the Right Overseas Student Travel Plan
Step 1: Check university acceptance first. Send the exact policy wording to your university's insurance office and obtain written approval for the waiver before relying on it.
Step 2: Match the dates properly. The cover should start no later than your departure from India and run through your course, holidays, and any permitted stay thereafter.
Step 3: Look past the base medical coverage. A USD 500,000 plan with heavy sub-limits and exclusions can be worse than a smaller plan with fewer restrictions. Check the mental health, maternity, dental, and Pre-Existing Disease (PED) limits separately.
Step 4: Confirm the definitions of the sponsor and study interruption. These vary a lot between insurers, and this is exactly where students lose out if the wording is ignored.
Step 5: Check extension rules. Renewing your policy from abroad is often optional, and insurers may decline to renew it after a claim. Do not assume automatic extension.
Step 6: Read the exclusions. Common ones include adventure sports, undisclosed pre-existing conditions, self-inflicted injury, and losses tied to alcohol or drug use.

Note: This is not an exhaustive list of plans. Confirm current coverages and sub-limits directly on the insurer's website before buying.
Cost, Documents Required, and Claim Process
Cost
Note: The premiums are calculated for the HDFC ERGO Student Suraksha plan. The numbers are indicative and for a single-trip policy, considering the following parameters:
- Trip Duration: 365 days
- No optional covers, loadings, discounts, or add-ons
- Premiums are in INR and exclusive of taxes
Premiums depend on your destination, sum insured, course duration, and medical history.
Documents Required
- Passport copy
- Visa copy
- Admission or offer letter from your university
- Your travel dates (departure and course start/end)
- I-20 or equivalent proof of university enrollment, if requested by the insurer
Claim Process
- For a Medical Emergency: Call the insurer's assistance helpline before or during hospitalization to arrange cashless treatment directly with the hospital. For smaller expenses, pay upfront and file for reimbursement with your bills and reports.
- For Study Interruption or Sponsor Protection: Keep your university fee invoices, proof of payment, withdrawal confirmation, refund statement, and medical or death certificate ready. Most insurers require notice within 7 to 30 days of the event, so do not delay in filing.
- In Case of Rejection or Delay: First, escalate to the insurer's grievance officer. If unresolved, you can register a complaint through IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal, and the Insurance Ombudsman handles disputes up to ₹30 lakh at no cost after you have filed a complaint with the insurer.

Conclusion
Student travel insurance protects your health, your tuition, and your family's savings while you study abroad. But the right plan depends entirely on your destination, your university's specific checklist, and how comprehensive the coverage actually is once you look past the marketed benefits.
Before you buy, get your university's insurance office to confirm in writing that your chosen policy will be accepted. Then compare study interruption, sponsor protection, and mental health limits across two or three insurers, not just the premium.
Note: Ditto currently does not help with standalone student travel insurance plans. What Ditto does help with is health insurance and term life insurance, the two products that form the actual foundation of your financial protection. If you're looking to sort either of those, we've got you covered:
