Overview
Buying travel insurance can feel confusing. There are too many plans, too many terms, and it's hard to know what's actually covered.
The challenge is choosing among TATA AIG’s individual and group travel plans, since each serves a different type of traveler.
This article breaks down TATA AIG travel insurance plans in plain language. You'll learn what each plan covers, what it doesn't, and how to buy, download, or claim your policy.
About TATA AIG Travel Insurance
TATA AIG General Insurance, established in 2001 as a joint venture between the TATA Group and American International Group (AIG), is a well-known private insurer in India. It's registered with IRDAI under registration number 108.
Its travel insurance portfolio covers single trips, annual multi-trips, domestic and international travel, Asian destinations, students, senior citizens, and group travel. Depending on the plan, you get cashless hospitalization support, overseas medical cover, and round-the-clock travel assistance.
Note: Not every benefit applies to every plan. Always check your policy schedule or certificate of insurance to confirm what your specific plan includes.
Types of TATA AIG Travel Insurance Plans
Note: This is not an exhaustive list of plans. For more details, you can visit the official website.
Beyond these, TATA AIG also offers Bharat Yatra Suraksha, an IRDAI-standardized domestic travel product, as well as separate group plans for international, domestic, and general travel protection.

Key Features of TATA AIG Travel Insurance
Emergency Medical Treatment
This is the core cover across all plans. It covers hospitalization, evacuation, and treatment costs if you fall ill or are injured during your trip. Deductibles and limits vary by plan and variant.
Single-Trip and Annual Multi-Trip Options
Single-trip cover protects one declared journey. Annual multi-trip cover suits frequent travelers, with eligible plans allowing multiple journeys of up to 30 or 45 days per trip, depending on the option. The 180-day period relates to single-trip coverage.
Student-Specific Protection
This applies only to the student plan. It includes sponsor protection if your sponsor dies or is disabled, study interruption if you cannot continue your course, and compassionate visit cover for a family member.
Senior Citizen Variants
International Plus offers dedicated senior and super-senior options for older travelers. However, medical sublimits typically apply from age 56 unless you choose an eligible no-sublimit variant.
Baggage and Passport Benefits
These usually cover the complete loss of checked baggage, not partial damage or missing contents. Payouts are capped, often at 50% of the sum insured per bag and 10% per article.
Automatic Trip Extension
If your return is delayed for a covered reason, the International plan can automatically extend your cover by up to 7 days. This is not a general option for voluntarily extending your trip.
Exclusions Under TATA AIG Travel Insurance
- Pre-Existing Diseases: Most plans exclude treatment for conditions you already had, except for limited emergency cover on select overseas plans.
- Self-Inflicted or Risky Conduct: This includes self-harm, suicide attempts, and claims linked to alcohol or drug intoxication.
- War and Nuclear Risks: Losses from war, invasion, military action, or nuclear and radioactive events are generally excluded.
- Hazardous Activities: Adventure sports such as skydiving or scuba diving are excluded unless specifically added via an eligible add-on.
- Pregnancy-Related Claims: Childbirth, miscarriage, and related treatment are excluded, apart from narrow accident-related exceptions.
- Travel for Treatment: Trips taken specifically to seek medical care, or against medical advice, are not covered.
These are just some common exclusions, and the exact list varies by plan and variant. For the complete list, always check the policy wordings on the official TATA AIG travel insurance page before you buy.
How to Buy and Download TATA AIG Travel Policy
You can buy a TATA AIG travel policy online in a few simple steps. No pre-policy medical tests are required, but you must still answer all proposal questions honestly.
1. Visit the TATA AIG travel insurance page and select your travel category, such as domestic, international, Asia, or student.
2. Enter trip details, including your destination, travel dates, trip purpose, and traveler ages, so TATA AIG can show you eligible plans.
3. Compare the available plan variants and sum insured options, and pick the one that fits your trip and budget.
4. Customize the policy. Add optional covers, such as adventure sports, PED, or cruise cover, if your trip needs them.
5. Complete the proposal, declarations, and payment. Your policy is issued electronically to your email.
For downloads, there are two separate options:
- Issued Policy: Access it through TATA AIG's self-service portal or app (App Store and Play Store) using your registered mobile number and OTP.
- Brochures and Wordings: Visit the official TATA AIG downloads page for brochures, prospectuses, policy wordings, and claim forms.
TATA AIG Travel Insurance Claim and Customer Care

2. Take Necessary Actions: For cases like theft or personal liability, take prompt steps such as informing the police or safeguarding damaged items.

Conclusion
A travel policy cannot prevent a medical emergency or lost baggage, but it can limit the financial impact. TATA AIG's travel insurance fills that gap for the duration of your trip. It covers emergency medical expenses, hospitalization, and evacuation during your trip. TATA AIG travel insurance pays for baggage loss, passport loss, trip cancellation, and flight delays.
However, it does not replace the health insurance that covers you in India year-round, nor can it replace your term life insurance. It does not cover pre-existing diseases except in the case of a narrow, life-threatening emergency or planned medical treatment abroad.
Ditto's Honest Take: The right TATA AIG travel plan depends on your destination and trip type, not just the price. Compare the medical sum insured, deductibles, age-related sublimits, and exclusions on the exact variant before you buy.
Please Note: Ditto currently does not help with standalone travel insurance plans. What we do help with is health insurance and term life insurance, the two products that form the actual foundation of your financial protection.
