SBI Life Smart Platina Plus: Full Review

Overview

SBI Life Smart Platina Plus (UIN:111N133V06) is a non-linked, non-participating individual life insurance savings product that combines guaranteed regular income with life insurance cover throughout the policy term.

Key Features and Eligibility

  • Guaranteed Income: Provides fixed regular income at yearly, half-yearly, quarterly, or monthly intervals during the chosen payout period.
  • Maturity Benefit: Pays a guaranteed lump sum equal to 110% of the total premiums paid at the end of the policy term.
  • Life Cover: The basic sum assured is 11 times the annualized premium. The sum assured on death is the highest of the three specified values, as per the policy terms.
  • Plan Options: Choose between the guaranteed income option and the life income option at policy inception. You cannot change the selected option later.
  • Payout Structure: The policy consists of the premium payment term, a one-year deferment period, and the chosen payout period.

When planning for your family’s future, having a steady income can help you meet important financial goals. But before choosing a plan that promises guaranteed benefits, you need to understand how much you pay, when you receive the money, and what returns you actually earn.

In this review, we look at SBI Life Smart Platina Plus and explain how the plan works, what returns you can expect, and the key limitations you should consider before buying it.

What Is SBI Life Smart Platina Plus?

SBI Life Smart Platina Plus is a savings plan designed to provide a regular income for your future financial needs. You can use it to plan for goals such as your child’s education, retirement, or other long-term expenses.

Under this plan, you pay premiums for a limited period and then receive a guaranteed income for the chosen payout period. You can choose a premium payment term of 6, 7, 8, or 10 years, depending on the available payout option. The payout period can range from 13 to 30 years, depending on the combination selected.

The policy term is calculated as: Premium Payment Term + 1 year + Payout Period

Once the premium payment term and one-year gap are over, the guaranteed income begins and continues for the selected payout period. At the end of the policy term, you also receive a maturity benefit equal to 110% of the total premiums paid, in addition to the income received during the payout period.

SBI Life Smart Platina Plus: Guaranteed Income vs. Life Income Options

1. Guaranteed Income Option: Under this option, if the life assured dies before the payout period begins, the nominee receives the applicable sum assured on death as a lump sum, and the policy terminates.

If the life assured dies after the payout period has started, the nominee receives the sum assured on death as a lump sum and continues to receive the remaining guaranteed income for the payout period. Alternatively, the nominee can choose to receive the discounted value of the future income as a lump sum, discounted at 8.25% per annum.

2. Life Income Option: Under this option, if the life assured dies at any point during the policy term, the nominee receives the sum assured on death as a lump sum, and the policy terminates. Future income payments do not continue.

If you are comparing income options across SBI Life’s savings products, SBI Life Smart Platina Supreme follows a different payout structure from Smart Platina Plus.

What Benefits Does SBI Life Smart Platina Plus Offer?

1) Guaranteed Income During the Payout Period

SBI Life Smart Platina Plus provides a guaranteed income during the chosen payout period, provided the life assured survives. You can choose to receive this income yearly, half-yearly, quarterly, or monthly, depending on your preference. Income starts after the premium payment term and the one-year deferment period end.

The guaranteed income amount depends on factors such as your age at entry, annualized premium, premium payment term, payout period, and the income plan option selected. The applicable modal factor also varies based on the frequency of income payouts.

2) 110% Maturity Benefit on Total Premiums Paid

If the life assured survives until the end of the policy term, SBI Life pays a maturity benefit equal to 110% of the total premiums paid under both the guaranteed income and life income options. SBI Life pays this amount as a lump sum at the end of the policy term, in addition to the guaranteed income received during the payout period.

The maturity benefit structure is an important factor to consider when comparing Smart Platina Plus with products such as SBI Life Smart Platina Assure.

Conclusion

SBI Life Smart Platina Plus delivers what it promises: guaranteed income, a maturity benefit equal to 110% of the total premiums paid, and life cover. However, guaranteed benefits do not necessarily mean good returns. The illustrated returns work out to an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of roughly 5.4% to 5.5%, depending on the income option.

Opt for a term insurance plan for higher life cover and invest the premium difference in products such as Public Provident Fund (PPF), fixed deposits, or debt mutual funds, depending on your risk appetite and financial goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the guaranteed income from SBI Life Smart Platina Plus actually better than a PPF return?

Not necessarily. SBI Life Smart Platina Plus offers guaranteed income, but the brochure illustration shows an estimated Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of around 5.4%. PPF returns depend on prevailing government-declared rates (currently at 7.1%) and can change over time. Therefore, compare the cash flows, tenure, liquidity, and tax treatment rather than focusing only on guaranteed payouts.

Can I switch from the Guaranteed Income option to the Life Income option after buying Smart Platina Plus?

No. You must choose either the guaranteed income option or the life income option when you purchase SBI Life Smart Platina Plus. You cannot change the selected income plan option. However, you can change the income payout frequency once within nine months of the expiry of the premium payment term, subject to the policy terms.

What is the maturity benefit under SBI Life Smart Platina Plus if I don't need the income yet?

If you survive until the end of the policy term, SBI Life Smart Platina Plus pays a maturity benefit equal to 110% of the total premiums paid. This is paid as a lump sum at maturity, along with the guaranteed income received during the payout period. You cannot defer this maturity benefit under the plan.

How does SBI Life Smart Platina Plus differ from its sibling plan, Smart Platina Supreme?

SBI Life Smart Platina Plus and Smart Platina Supreme have different income structures. Smart Platina Plus lets you choose between life income and guaranteed income, with different treatment of future payouts after death. Smart Platina Supreme offers level guaranteed income or increasing guaranteed income, where the payout increases by 5% each year from the second payout year. Compare the latest benefit illustrations before choosing.

Is SBI Life Smart Platina Plus a good alternative to buying term insurance and a mutual fund separately?

For most buyers, no. If your priority is adequate life cover and investment flexibility, buying term insurance and investing separately is usually the better structure. Smart Platina Plus provides guaranteed, non-market-linked cash flows, but its life cover is relatively modest, and your money remains committed for a long period. It may suit those who value guaranteed payouts and accept lower liquidity and moderate returns.

What happens to my Smart Platina Plus payouts if I pass away during the income payout period?

Under the guaranteed income option, if the life assured dies after the payout period begins, the nominee receives the sum assured on death and can continue receiving the guaranteed income. Alternatively, the nominee can choose its discounted value as a lump sum. Under the life income option, only the sum assured on death is paid.

Can I surrender SBI Life Smart Platina Plus early?

Yes. You can surrender the policy after paying premiums for at least one full policy year. The special surrender value applies after the first policy year, while the guaranteed surrender value applies after two consecutive years of premium payments. On surrender, you receive the higher of the applicable values. Early surrender may result in receiving less than the total premiums paid.

Does SBI Life Smart Platina Plus offer an accident benefit rider?

Yes. You can add the SBI Life Accident Benefit Rider (UIN: 111B041V01) for an additional premium. It offers accidental death benefit and accidental partial and permanent disability benefit options. The rider is subject to specific eligibility, attachment, and payout conditions, including restrictions based on the purchase channel.

What is SBI Life Smart Platina Young Achiever?

SBI Life Smart Platina Young Achiever is a savings product designed for long-term financial goals. You can consider it alongside Smart Platina Plus if you want to build funds for goals such as a child’s education or other future expenses. Compare the benefit structure, payout period, premiums, and expected returns before choosing.
