Overview
A retirement plan can look attractive when the projected corpus runs into lakhs or crores. But that number alone doesn't tell the full story.
You also need to understand where your premiums are invested, how different charges eat into returns, and whether you can access the entire accumulated corpus when you retire.
That is particularly important with pension ULIPs (Unit-Linked Insurance Plans) such as SBI Life Retire Smart Plus, where market performance and policy rules both affect what you eventually receive.
In this SBI Life Retire Smart Plus review, we break down how the plan works, its fund options, illustrated returns, charges, withdrawal rules, and the key limitations you should know before buying.
What Is SBI Life Retire Smart Plus?
SBI Life Retire Smart Plus invests the premium, after deducting applicable charges, in the pension fund or combination of funds selected by the policyholder. Because it is a market-linked product, the policyholder bears the investment risk, and the final corpus depends on fund performance.
The SBI Life Retire Smart Plus benefits include seven fund options, flexible premium payment options, fund switching, partial withdrawals after the lock-in period, and retirement corpus options at vesting. Policyholders can also switch between funds during the policy term without a switching charge.
At vesting, policyholders can use the accumulated corpus to purchase an annuity, while up to 60% can be commuted as a lump sum, subject to applicable regulations. The plan also provides loyalty additions from the 15th policy year and a 1.5% terminal addition, provided the policy remains in force.

SBI Life Retire Smart Plus Charges
The premium allocation charge is deducted before the premium is invested, while the policy administration charge is deducted monthly from the fund value. FMC is reflected in the fund's Net Asset Value (NAV).
For the detailed list of charges and how each charge is applied, refer to pages 25 to 28 of the SBI Life Retire Smart Plus brochure. These pages cover premium allocation charges, policy administration charges, FMC, discontinuance charges, switching, premium redirection, partial withdrawal, miscellaneous, and mortality charges.
SBI Life Retire Smart Plus Vesting Rules
At vesting, the Retire Smart Plus SBI Life corpus can be used to purchase an annuity, while up to 60% can be commuted as a lump sum, subject to applicable regulations.
The option to extend the accumulation or deferment period is also available if the policyholder is below age 60 at vesting. The extension can continue up to age 70, provided the total policy term does not exceed 35 years. For regular premium policies, premiums must continue during the extended accumulation period.
The plan also provides loyalty additions from the end of the 15th policy year and a 1.5% terminal addition at vesting or earlier death, provided the policy is in force. Loyalty additions do not apply to policy terms of 10 to 14 years.
SBI Life Retire Smart Plus Sample Returns Illustration by Age and Investment Amount
SBI Life's brochure provides an illustration for a 30-year-old policyholder who invests ₹1 lakh annually for 25 years, for a total premium of ₹25 lakh. The SBI Life Retire Smart Plus returns illustration assumes the entire premium is invested in the Equity Pension Fund.
Note: The maturity benefit includes the fund value and terminal addition. These figures are scenarios, not guaranteed or expected returns. The actual corpus depends on the fund selected, investment performance, premiums paid, policy duration, and applicable charges.
IRDAI requires ULIP benefit illustrations to use gross return assumptions of 4% and 8% per annum. For SBI Life Retire Smart Plus, the effective policyholder net return is approximately 2.60% at 4% and 6.54% at 8%. This reflects the impact of the plan’s applicable charges and additions.

SBI Life Retire Smart Plus vs. NPS and Mutual Funds for Retirement
Pros & Cons of SBI Life Retire Smart Plus
Pros
- Seven Fund Options: Policyholders can choose from equity-heavy, balanced, debt-focused, and money-market funds based on their risk appetite.
- Loyalty and Terminal Additions: The loyalty addition is 0.30% of the average fund value, measured on the first day of each policy month over the preceding 12 months. It is credited annually from the end of policy year 15, subject to eligibility conditions.
- Free Fund Switching: Unlimited fund switches are allowed during the policy term without a switching charge. Free premium redirection is also available from the second policy year.
- Flexible Premium Payments: The plan offers single, regular, and limited premium payment options, with no maximum premium limit subject to the insurer's underwriting policy.
Cons
- Multiple Charges: Premium allocation, policy administration, FMC, and mortality charges can reduce the amount invested and the overall corpus.
- Five-Year Lock-In: There is no liquidity during the first five years, and surrender proceeds during this period are subject to the applicable discontinuance rules.
- Restricted Access at Vesting: You cannot withdraw the retirement corpus entirely as a lump sum. You can commute up to 60%, while the remaining corpus is used to purchase an annuity, subject to applicable regulations. However, if the proceeds are insufficient to purchase the regulatory minimum annuity, you can pay the entire amount as a lump sum.
- Market-linked Returns: The returns are not guaranteed, so market performance can affect the final retirement corpus.

Conclusion
SBI Life Retire Smart Plus is a market-linked pension ULIP, so its returns are not guaranteed. The 4% and 8% figures shown in the policy illustration are assumed scenarios and should not be treated as expected returns. The plan also involves premium allocation, policy administration, fund management, and mortality charges, which can affect the overall corpus.
Before committing to a long-term premium, prospective policyholders may want to compare the plan with alternatives such as NPS and mutual funds, particularly on charges, liquidity, investment flexibility, and annuitization requirements.
It may also help to ensure adequate term life and health insurance are in place first, as these provide the foundation for financial planning. Once these essential protections are in place, retirement planning can be the next step.
