Overview
Most health insurance plans have a fixed structure where you choose a Sum Insured (SI) and review predefined benefits. But SBI Alpha Health Insurance from SBI General Insurance lets you choose the benefits yourself. You choose your mandatory base cover, then custom-build your coverage by selecting from 35 optional add-ons that expand into over 50 benefits.
In this SBI Alpha Health Insurance review, we will cover how it works, what you can customize, and whether it adds value.
What Is SBI Alpha Health Insurance?
SBI Alpha Health Insurance is a customizable health insurance plan where some benefits aren't built in but added on top of the base sum insured you select.
The plan provides standard coverage, including in-patient treatment, day care procedures, pre- and post-hospitalization, and other medical expenses. But unlike traditional plans, a few commonly expected features such as health checkups, consumables, or air ambulance are not automatically covered.
How the Modular Cover-Building Works in SBI Alpha Health Plan
The SBI Alpha plan includes Hospitalization Cover and Personal Accident Cover as a base. From this base, you can expand coverage by selecting optional add-ons. Here, the plan gives you the freedom to choose features according to:
- How much of the medical cost are you willing to pay yourself?
- Which expenses you want to cover?
- Whether you want basic protection or extended coverage.
SBI Health Alpha Optional Covers: What Can You Add?
SBI Alpha has 35 optional covers, but the choice should depend on your needs, such as medical, financial, or lifestyle. The plan's value comes from carefully selecting essential add-ons rather than focusing on niche lifestyle benefits. Let’s discuss some of their important add-ons:
- Room Rent: By default, the base plan covers actual room rent with no capping. Always keep this setting on "Actuals." However, changing to a single private AC room or a twin-sharing room to save on premium can trigger a proportionate deduction.
- Consumables: Non-medical items utilized during your treatment, such as gloves, masks, and syringes, can easily make up 10% to 15% of your final hospital bill. Opting for this rider ensures the listed consumables are covered.
- Restore Benefit: If you make a claim during a policy year, this benefit will restore up to 100% of your base sum insured. It can be used unlimited times within the year for any subsequent related or unrelated claims, starting from your second claim.
- Ambulance Cover: Make sure you add basic transportation riders. This includes standard road and air ambulance coverage for domestic medical emergencies. Additionally, the unique Radio Cab Cover reimburses registered taxi fares to get you to the hospital or to transport you home after being discharged.
- Vision Correction: Most traditional health insurance plans only cover surgeries like LASIK for extreme errors of 7.5 diopters or more. This plan covers medically necessary vision correction surgeries for refractive errors exceeding ±4.5 diopters, subject to your opted 12- or 24-month waiting period.
- Plan Ahead: If you get married or have a baby, this instantly transfers your served waiting periods (initial, specific illness, and pre-existing disease) to your newly married spouse (up to age 35) or newborn child added within 120 days.
- Maternity and Child Care: It covers up to two deliveries. Normal or C-section maternity hospitalization, prenatal/postnatal care (including up to ₹10,000 for outpatient consultations), newborn baby care for the first 90 days, and child vaccination up to age 12.
- Assisted Reproduction Treatment: Covers insured members aged 18-45 for fertility treatments like IVF, IUI, ZIFT, and advanced reproductive technologies.
- Outpatient Department (OPD) Cover: Pays for day-to-day medical expenses like consultations, diagnostics, physiotherapy, or medicines. You can choose to add a voluntary co-payment of 10% or 25% to reduce premiums.
- Global Cover: Covers medical treatment outside of India up to age 65. It covers emergency admission for 45 consecutive days per trip up to a maximum of 90 days per policy year. It also covers planned hospitalization for 16 specific critical illnesses, like cancer surgery or major organ transplants, and has a 24-month waiting period.
Note: The list above covers the most popular, high-impact optional covers under the plan and is not exhaustive. Other niche covers include Adventure Sports, Gym and Sports Injury Cover, Reconstructive Surgery, Prosthetics, Gender Reassignment, Convalescence, and Companion Cover. For the full list, please refer to SBI General Alpha policy wordings and prospectus.
Features of SBI Alpha Health Plan
Note on Zones: SBI Alpha follows a zone-based pricing model (Zone A and Zone B). If you are insured in a lower-cost zone (Zone B) but get treated in a higher-cost zone (Zone A), a 20% co-payment will apply. For a detailed list of cities under each zone, refer to page 21 of the prospectus.

Pros & Cons of SBI Alpha Health Insurance
Pros:
- High Customization: Lets you design your plan based on your exact needs, unlike most standard plans.
Cons:
- Higher Complexity: No bundled benefits means you must choose add-ons carefully and understand what each one actually covers.
- Mixed Impact Add-Ons: Some add-ons (like consumables and waiting period reductions) improve coverage, while others (like co-payment or room rent limits) reduce premiums but increase out-of-pocket costs.
- Slower Adoption: SBI Alpha has seen lower uptake than simpler plans like the Super Health and Arogya series, covering 40,755 lives across 20,657 policies in FY 2025–26.
- Can Get Expensive: Adding multiple covers can significantly increase the overall premium.
- Harder to Compare: Customization makes it difficult to compare with standard health insurance plans on a like-for-like basis.
