Kotak Life e-Term Plan vs. SBI Life Smart Shield Plus: Key Features Compared

    • Death Benefit Payouts: Kotak Life e-Term offers three payout options at purchase: a lump sum, 10% upfront followed by level annual payments for 15 years, or 10% upfront followed by increasing annual payments for 15 years. SBI Life Smart Shield Plus lets nominees choose a lump sum, installments, or a combination at claim settlement, subject to policy terms.
    • Special Exit Benefit: Kotak Life e-Term Plan offers a Special Exit Benefit for eligible policies with a term of at least 40 years. Policyholders can recover eligible premiums during a specified one-year window. On the other hand, SBI Life Smart Shield Plus does not list an equivalent feature in the plan details provided currently
    • Wellness Benefits: Kotak Life e-Term Plan includes a free medical check-up every five years, starting from the fifth policy year. It also provides access to telemedicine, health programs, and a wellness app, although some services may involve charges. Unlike Kotak, the SBI Life Smart Shield Plus features listed here do not include comparable wellness benefits.
    • Life-Event Cover Increases: Both plans offer ways to increase cover after major life events. Kotak Life provides a Step-Up Option for eligible events, but it is limited to the Regular Pay variant and is unavailable for online purchases. SBI Life Smart Shield Plus offers Future Proofing for events such as marriage, childbirth, or home purchase, subject to policy conditions.
    • Cover Reduction and Premium Waiver: Unlike Smart Shield Plus, Kotak Life e-Term Plan allows eligible policyholders to reduce cover once during the policy term through its Step-Down Option. Its Life Secure option also waives future premiums after total and permanent disability.
    • Better Half Benefit: Unlike the e-Term Plan, SBI Life Smart Shield Plus offers the Better Half Benefit, which allows the nominated spouse to receive separate life cover up to 50% of the original sum assured or ₹25 lakh, whichever is lower, without further premiums until age 60 or policy expiry, whichever comes first.

Riders Offered

    • Accidental Death Benefit: SBI Life Smart Shield Plus offers an Accidental Death Benefit (ADB) Rider that pays an additional lump sum if death occurs due to an accident. Kotak Life e-Term Plan’s listed riders do not include a comparable accidental death rider.
    • Permanent Disability Cover: Kotak’s optional Permanent Disability Benefit Rider pays 120% of the rider sum assured over five years for qualifying accidental total and permanent disability. It cannot be combined with the e-Term Life Secure option. SBI Life’s optional Accidental Partial Permanent Disability Rider covers specified permanent injuries caused by accidents, with payouts based on the type and severity of disability. Thus, the riders differ in their coverage scope and payout structure.
    • Critical Illness Cover: Unlike SBI Life Smart Shield Plus’s listed riders, Kotak Life e-Term Plan offers a Critical Illness Plus Benefit Rider that covers 37 critical illnesses and pays a lump sum upon diagnosis, subject to policy terms.

Note: Other plans offered by the insurers include SBI Life Smart Shield Premier and Kotak Signature Term Plan. Both plans offer life cover starting at ₹2 crore, catering to high-income individuals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy Kotak Life e-Term or SBI Life Smart Shield Plus without a medical test?

A medical test may not be required in every case, but neither insurer guarantees a no-medical-test purchase. The requirement depends on factors such as your age, sum assured, health history, occupation, and underwriting assessment. Answer all health questions honestly, even if no tests are requested. The insurer may still ask for medical examinations before approving your application.

Is SBI Life Insurance a government-owned company?

No. SBI Life Insurance is a publicly listed private-sector life insurance company, not a government department or wholly government-owned insurer. State Bank of India is its principal promoter and holds a majority stake. Although SBI is a public-sector bank, SBI Life operates as a separate corporate entity and follows insurance regulations set by IRDAI.

What happens to my Kotak Life e-Term policy if I stop paying premiums?

If you miss a premium, Kotak Life provides a grace period of 30 days for annual, half-yearly, and quarterly payments, and 15 days for monthly payments. If you do not pay within this period, the policy may lapse, and life cover can end. You may be able to revive it within the permitted period, subject to outstanding premiums, interest, and underwriting requirements.

Do Kotak Life e-Term and SBI Life Smart Shield Plus cover terminal illness?

Currently, Kotak Life e-Term’s listed core benefits focus on death cover, accidental death under Life Plus, and premium waiver after total and permanent disability under Life Secure. SBI Life Smart Shield Plus also focuses on death cover. There’s no terminal illness benefit. Check the latest policy documents to confirm whether any terminal illness benefit applies to your chosen variant.

How long does Kotak Life or SBI Life take to settle a death claim?

Under IRDAI’s September 2024 Master Circular on policyholder protection, insurers must settle life insurance death claims without investigation within 15 days of claim intimation. Claims requiring investigation have 45 days to settle. Nominees should notify the insurer promptly and submit the required documents. If the insurer misses the applicable deadline, it must pay interest at the bank rate plus two percentage points, calculated from claim intimation until payment, without requiring a separate request.

Can I buy SBI Life Smart Shield Plus at age 70?

No. SBI Life Smart Shield Plus does not accept new applicants aged 70 under its standard entry-age limits. The maximum entry age is 65 for single-pay and limited-pay options, and 60 for regular-pay options. The Level Cover with Future Proofing option has a lower maximum entry age of 40. Check the latest brochure for the exact limits before applying.

Can my nominee claim the death benefit if I die abroad under Kotak Life e-Term Plan?

A death abroad does not automatically invalidate a Kotak Life e-Term claim. The nominee must notify the insurer and provide the required documents, which may include the foreign death certificate, medical records, identity documents, and certified translations or attestations where required. The insurer will assess the claim under the policy terms. Keep your nominee informed about the policy and where to find its documents.

What can my nominee do if Kotak Life rejects a death claim?

Your nominee should obtain the insurer’s written rejection letter and check the reasons against the policy terms and proposal disclosures. They can challenge the decision through Kotak Life’s grievance redressal process and escalate the complaint through IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa platform. The Insurance Ombudsman may also be an option if the matter falls within its jurisdiction. The complainant must first approach the insurer and can contact the Ombudsman if the response is unsatisfactory or the insurer fails to respond within 30 days.

How can I complete my SBI Life premium payment online?

You can complete your SBI Life premium payment through the insurer’s official website. Enter your policy number or registered mobile number and date of birth. Next, enter the generated One-Time Password (OTP) and follow the instructions to pay using an available online payment method. Keep your policy number and payment confirmation for future reference.
