Overview

The HDFC Life LiveWell Rider is an optional add-on available with eligible linked and non-linked HDFC Life policies. It combines financial protection with wellness benefits, including OPD consultations, diagnostics, preventive checkups, and healthy living rewards.

The Rider Offers Multiple Protection Options:

  • Option A (Death Cover): Provides an additional payout on the life assured’s death and also includes a terminal illness benefit.
  • Option B (Accidental Death Cover): Provides an additional benefit if the life assured’s death results from a covered accident.
  • Option C (Personal Accident Cover): Covers accidental death, partial permanent disability, and total permanent disability. Accidental Total and Permanent Disability (ATPD) can provide 1% of the rider sum assured every month for 10 years.
  • Option D: Depends on the version. Under the linked LiveWell Rider, Option D provides daily hospitalization cash and surgical care for a maximum rider term of five years. Under the non-Linked LiveWell Rider, Option D is policy continuance cover.
  • Option E: Only available with the non-linked version offering daily hospitalization and surgical care benefits.

A regular life insurance policy can protect a family against a major financial loss due to the policyholder's death. Still, it may not cover every situation that can disrupt the policyholder’s finances. Accidental disability, hospital stays, or even routine OPD and diagnostic costs can create separate gaps that the base plan was never designed to handle.

The HDFC Life LiveWell Rider seeks to address several of these gaps in a single add-on.

For this guide, we reviewed the current linked and non-linked brochures and policy documents. We explain what each option pays, how the wellness benefits work, what the rider costs, HDFC Life LiveWell rider benefits, and who should actually consider it.

What Is the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider?

The HDFC Life LiveWell Rider is a paid add-on that combines additional financial protection with a wellness program. It can be added at the start of an eligible base policy or later on a premium due date.

Depending on the option and rider version selected, the cover can include benefits for death or terminal illness, accidental death, accidental disability, policy continuance, daily hospitalization cash, and surgical care.

The wellness layer adds benefits that can be used while the policy is active. These include OPD consultations, prescribed diagnostics, teleconsultations, preventive health checkups, and rewards for maintaining healthy habits. HDFC Life states that eligible wellness benefits can be worth up to 100% of the annual rider premium. The wellness network also provides access to 1 lakh+ doctors, 500+ hospitals, and 362+ labs.

The official HDFC Life LiveWell Rider brochure is available separately for the linked version and non-linked version. Checking the correct brochure is important because the option structures differ between them.

This resolves the comment without simply relocating the original paragraph. The intro now teases what LiveWell does, while the H2 actually explains the product and naturally sets up the following Options A to E comparison table.

The HDFC Life LiveWell Rider plan Option C benefits are fairly comprehensive for accident-related risks. Eligible total permanent disability pays 1% of the rider sum assured every month for 10 years. Eligible partial permanent disabilities receive a percentage of the rider sum assured, based on the degree of the impairment.

The HDFC Life LiveWell Rider plan Option D benefits depend on the version. Non-linked’s Option D waives future base premiums and keeps eligible base-policy benefits running after the life assured’s death or terminal illness. Linked’s Option D provides daily hospitalization cash and surgical care.

The current non-linked version also has Option E for Daily Hospitalization Cash and Surgical Care. Key Features of the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider

The HDFC Life LiveWell Rider wellness benefits are one of its biggest differentiators. Some other features of the rider are as follows:

    • OPD and Diagnostics: Regular and limited pay policies allocate 50% of the annual rider premium toward OPD consultations and another 50% toward prescribed diagnostics. For rider premiums above ₹5,000, GP visits are capped at ₹500, specialist visits at ₹1,000, and diagnostics at ₹1,000 per incident.
    • Healthy Living Program: Health assessments, annual checkups, healthy parameters, quizzes, and step goals earn points that convert into health coins worth 5% to 20% of the annual rider premium.
    • Health Coin Rewards: Reaching 10,000 points earns the Silver tier and Health Coins worth 5% of the annual rider premium. Coins can be used for services such as preventive checkups, dental care, physiotherapy, chronic care, pharmacy vouchers, and mental health consultations. Unused coins do not carry forward.
    • Family Wellness Access: Wellness benefits can extend to one spouse and up to two children below age 25 through HDFC Life's Wellness mobile app. A 30-day waiting period applies.

HDFC Life also offers three optional benefits at an additional rider premium:

    • Return of Premium: The life assured receives 100% of the Total Rider Premiums Paid if they survive until the end of the rider term. Any rider benefits already paid are deducted from this maturity payout. The option must be selected when the rider begins and is not available under the Non-Linked Policy Continuance Cover.
    • Double Benefit: Benefits under Options B and C are doubled if the covered accidental death or permanent disability occurs in specific circumstances listed by HDFC Life. These include traveling as a fare-paying passenger on specified public transport or a scheduled commercial airline, traveling in an eligible passenger elevator, or as a direct result of fire in certain public buildings.
    • Accident Plus: This is available with Option C. After an accepted Accidental Total Permanent Disability (ATPD) or Accidental Partial Permanent Disability (APPD) claim, HDFC Life pays an additional 10% of the Option C sum assured toward modifying the life assured's home or vehicle. Another 10% is payable toward prescribed physical or occupational therapy.

The exact wellness allocation differs for single pay policies, where benefits are spread over the specified period rather than provided in a single annual payment.

Linked Versus Non-Linked Versions of the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider

The linked version lists ULIPs such as Smart Protect Plus Plan and Sampoorn Nivesh Plus among eligible products. HDFC Life’s current Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus term plan lists the Non-Linked LiveWell Rider. In simple terms, eligible HDFC ULIPs use linked, while eligible term and traditional savings policies use non-linked.

If the distinction between these products feels confusing, Ditto’s guide to ULIPs breaks down how market-linked policies work.

HDFC Life LiveWell Rider Sample Premium and Eligibility

To understand how the LiveWell accident-related benefits affect the overall premium, we pulled an illustration for HDFC Life Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus.

The profile is for a 30-year-old non-smoking male from Delhi (pincode: 110010) with a ₹2 crore base sum assured and coverage until age 70. Since Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus is a term insurance plan, the non-linked version of the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider applies.

Pros and Cons of the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider

ProsCons
Broad protection choicesOption structure differs by version
Option C covers accidental death plus partial and total disabilityCostlier than a basic accidental disability income rider
Wellness benefits add everyday utilityWellness services have caps and network conditions

Another limitation worth noting is that wellness services are provided by third-party providers, and HDFC Life reserves the right to change the service or provider.

Who Should Buy the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider?

Who Should Buy: Option C makes the most sense for someone seeking comprehensive accidental protection and planning to actually use the wellness benefits. It packages accidental death, partial permanent disability, and total permanent disability together.

Who Should Avoid: Someone who only wants income protection against accidental total and permanent disability can consider HDFC Life’s simpler Income Benefit on Accidental Disability Rider instead.

For term insurance buyers, we would generally prioritize a useful Waiver of Premium Rider and Critical Illness Rider before accident-specific extras.

Conclusion

The HDFC Life LiveWell Rider combines traditional protection with benefits that can be used while the policy is active. Option C stands out for broader accidental protection, while the wellness program can be useful for families that will actually use OPD, diagnostics, and preventive care.

Before adding it, compare the exact option available under the base policy and its premium with simpler riders that cover the specific risk the life assured wants covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider worth adding to an HDFC Life policy?

It can be useful if the life assured wants broader accidental protection or expects to make genuine use of the wellness benefits. Option C is the most interesting because it combines accidental death, partial permanent disability, and total permanent disability protection. However, someone who only needs basic accidental disability income may find HDFC Life’s Income Benefit on Accidental Disability Rider simpler and considerably cheaper.

What does plan Option D of the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider actually pay for?

It depends on the version. Under the non-linked LiveWell Rider, Option D is Policy Continuance Cover. If an eligible death or terminal illness claim occurs, future base-policy premiums are waived, and the base policy continues so that future survival or maturity benefits remain payable when due.

Under the linked version, Option D instead provides daily hospitalization cash and surgical care benefits.

Can I use HDFC Life LiveWell Rider wellness benefits for OPD consultations and lab tests?

Yes. The wellness program includes in-clinic OPD consultations and prescribed lab and radiology services. For regular and limited pay policies, 50% of the annual rider premium is allocated to OPD consultations, and the remaining 50% to prescribed lab and radiology services. Individual consultation and diagnostic caps can still apply.

Can I add my spouse and children to the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider wellness programme?

The wellness services can be extended to one spouse and up to two children under 25. These benefits can be accessed through HDFC Life's Wellness mobile app. The insurance rider itself and its insured benefits should not be confused with this family wellness access.

What happens to the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider if my base HDFC Life policy is surrendered?

The LiveWell Rider cannot continue independently once the attached base policy terminates. HDFC Life’s current rider documents state that rider coverage terminates when the base policy terminates. A surrender or cancellation value may be payable under the rider depending on the premium payment structure, whether return of premium was selected, and how long premiums were paid.

Is there a cap on the terminal illness payout under the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider?

Yes. Under Option A, HDFC Life can accelerate the rider sum assured upon an eligible terminal illness diagnosis, subject to a maximum acceleration of ₹2 crore. This is not an additional payout over the rider sum assured. It is an early payment of the applicable rider benefit. The terminal illness benefit is available when the life assured is age 80 or below. But please note that Option A is not offered with term plans.

Where can I download the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider brochure and policy bond?

The current HDFC Life LiveWell Rider brochure is available for download from HDFC Life’s official brochure library. Separate documents are available for the linked rider with UIN 101A036V02 and the non-Linked rider with UIN 101B033V01. HDFC Life also publishes the corresponding policy bonds and rider-at-a-glance documents through its customer service section.

What does Daily Hospitalization Cash and Surgical Care cover under the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider?

This benefit is available as Option D under the Linked rider and Option E under the Non-Linked rider. After an eligible hospitalization lasting at least 24 continuous hours, HDFC Life pays 1% of the rider sum assured per day for a non-ICU stay and 2% per day for an ICU stay. Daily hospital cash is limited to 20 days in a policy year and 100 days over the rider term. Eligible minor surgeries pay 5% of the rider sum assured, while major surgeries pay 10%. These are fixed benefits and are not linked to the actual hospital bill.

What are the major exclusions under the HDFC Life LiveWell Rider?

The exclusions depend on the option selected. Accident-related Options B and C exclude claims linked to pre-existing conditions, substance abuse, intentional self-injury, certain hazardous activities, criminal acts, war, and non-passenger aviation, among other situations. Daily Hospitalization Cash and Surgical Care have additional exclusions and waiting periods for pre-existing diseases, specified procedures, maternity-related hospitalizations, cosmetic treatments, certain dental care, diagnostic-only admissions, and hospitalizations lasting less than 24 hours. Option A and the Non-Linked Policy Continuance Cover also carry the applicable suicide exclusion. Always check the exclusions for the specific option selected.
