Key Consideration

ABSLI Param Suraksha plan carries various charges and a five-year lock-in. Before buying, having a cost-benefit analysis is a must.

Param Suraksha by Aditya Birla Sun Life combines life insurance protection with market-linked investments in a single ULIP. While it offers multiple funds, investment strategies, and charge-return features, the real question is whether this bundled structure makes sense compared with keeping insurance and investments separate.

This guide breaks down the ABSLI Param Suraksha Plan in simple terms, covering its benefits, strategies, drawbacks, charges, and whether it fits your long-term financial goals.

What Is the ABSLI Param Suraksha Plan?

Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance Param Suraksha (UIN: 109L149V01) is a unit-linked non-participating individual life insurance savings plan.

If the life insured dies while the policy is in force, the nominee receives the highest of the fund value, applicable sum assured, or 105% of total annualized premiums received up to the date of death, adjusted for eligible recent withdrawals.

At maturity, the policyholder receives the fund value as a lump sum, subject to the settlement option. The plan is also marketed as ABSLI Her Growth.

Key Features of ABSLI Param Suraksha: 30× Sum Assured Multiple, Return of Charges, and Systematic Withdrawals

ABSLI markets Param Suraksha as offering life cover “as high as 30×” the annualized premium. However, the actual sum assured multiple can range from 7× to 30×, depending on factors such as your entry age and policy term. Therefore, 30× is not automatically available to every customer.

Return of Charges

    • Premium Allocation Charges: ABSLI adds back 2× the total eligible premium allocation charges as extra units at the end of each policy year from policy years 10 to 13, subject to policy conditions.
    • Mortality Charges: From policy year 11, ABSLI returns 2× the eligible mortality charges by allocating additional units to the fund value, subject to applicable terms and conditions.

What Are Systematic Withdrawals?

The Systematic Withdrawal Facility (SWF) lets you automate regular withdrawals from your fund value after the five-year lock-in, helping you create a structured cash flow.

  • Withdrawal Rate: Choose 5% or 10% of the fund value at the end of the relevant year.
  • Payout Frequency: Select annual, semi-annual, quarterly, or monthly payouts.
  • Start Year: Choose the policy year when withdrawals should begin, subject to the five-year lock-in and applicable conditions.

You can opt in or out of SWF during the policy term. However, it is unavailable during the discontinuance and settlement periods.

Fund Options and Investment Strategies in the ABSLI Param Suraksha Plan

The ULIP offers 21 fund options designed for different investment goals and risk preferences. For example, the Assure Fund focuses on capital preservation, safety, and liquidity through investments in high-quality short-term debt instruments, while the Protector Fund aims to generate consistent returns by actively managing a fixed-income portfolio with marginal equity exposure and a relatively lower risk appetite.

Investment Strategies

    • Systematic Transfer: Available with the annual premium payment mode, this strategy initially allocates premiums to the Liquid Plus fund and gradually transfers them to the selected funds each month. This helps stagger market entry and reduces reliance on market timing.
    • Return Optimiser: Seeks to participate in market growth while periodically protecting accumulated gains from market volatility. Invests net premiums in the Maximiser fund. When the gains reach at least 10% of the net invested amount, the accumulated appreciation is transferred to the Income Advantage fund at the prevailing Net Asset Value (NAV).
    • Smart Investment: Automatically adjusts the equity-debt allocation as the policy approaches maturity, based on your chosen risk profile.
    • Life Cycle: Adjusts the equity-debt allocation based on your age and chosen risk profile.
    • Self-Managed: Gives you full control over fund selection and how your money is allocated across funds.

For detailed information on the funds offered and investment strategies, refer to page 5 and pages 6 to 8 of the official ABSLI Param Suraksha policy brochure, respectively.

01

ABSLI Accidental Death Benefit Rider Plus

02

ABSLI Waiver of Premium Rider

The insurer pays future premiums if the policyholder becomes completely disabled due to an illness or accident or is diagnosed with a specified critical illness. Other policy benefits continue unchanged. This benefit is applicable once during the entire PPT.

03

04

ABSLI Suraksha Term Rider

Provides an additional lump sum benefit if the life insured dies or is diagnosed with a terminal illness during the rider term, whichever occurs first. The rider sum assured is accelerated on diagnosis of terminal illness, subject to the applicable conditions.

05

ABSLI Suraksha Term Rider Plus

Provides a lump sum benefit on death or terminal illness, whichever occurs first. The rider sum assured is accelerated on diagnosis of terminal illness. It also includes complimentary health management services, such as medical consultations, second opinions, and personal medical case management.

Note: At Ditto, we recommend waiver of premium and critical illness riders because they provide meaningful financial protection when a serious illness or disability affects your life.

Pros and Cons of the ABSLI Param Suraksha Plan

Pros of ABSLI Param Suraksha

    • Wide fund choice gives you flexibility to build an equity, debt, or hybrid portfolio based on your risk appetite.
    • Five investment strategies offer flexibility ranging from complete control to automated portfolio management.
    • ULIP tax benefits like Section 123 (formerly Section 80C) are available under the old tax regime, subject to applicable conditions. The maturity exemption under Section 11, read with Schedule II (previously Section 10(10D)), is subject to applicable conditions.
    • If you have selected the Self-managed or Systematic Transfer investment strategy, you can switch from one fund to another, provided the switched amount is at least ₹5,000. There is no limit on the number of fund switches that you can exercise in a policy year, and all switches are free of charge.

Cons of ABSLI Param Suraksha

    • ULIP charges like FMC up to 1.35% p.a. create an ongoing drag on your fund value and can affect long-term returns.
    • Policy administration charges from year 5 may continue for the entire policy term, subject to policy terms.
    • Charge refunds require long-term commitment, so stopping the policy early can reduce the benefit of these credits.
    • The plan does not provide adequate life cover. A pure term plan is more efficient for substantial life protection. At Ditto, we recommend starting with at least ₹1 crore of cover. However, your ideal sum assured should also account for inflation, liabilities, and future responsibilities. Use the Ditto Cover Calculator for a rough estimate.

Conclusion

ABSLI Param Suraksha may suit buyers who cannot access a suitable term plan and specifically want to combine insurance with market-linked investments in one product. However, at Ditto, we don't recommend ULIPs because combining protection and investments can make costs and performance inefficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ABSLI Param Suraksha a good way to combine life cover and market returns?

It combines both in one ULIP, but whether it is suitable depends on your goals, risk appetite, premium commitment, and required life cover. Compare its costs, projected net IRR, liquidity, and protection against separate term insurance and investments.

What is the difference between Param Suraksha and Param Suraksha Pro?

ABSLI Param Suraksha Pro was launched in February 2026 as a product combining life protection with wealth creation. However, the sources reviewed did not include detailed public product documents or the UIN. Check the latest insurer-issued prospectus and policy documents before comparing its benefits, charges, eligibility, or structure with Param Suraksha.

When does Param Suraksha return 2× eligible charges?

Param Suraksha returns eligible premium allocation charges at 2× between policy years 10 and 13. Eligible mortality charges are returned at 2× from Policy Year 11, subject to applicable conditions. The charge returns are credited as additional fund units, provided the policy remains in force and all due premiums are paid. A reduced paid-up policy is not eligible for future charge returns, while mortality-charge returns exclude any underwriting extra premium.

Can I take regular monthly withdrawals before maturity?

Yes. The SWF allows regular withdrawals after completing five policy years, provided the policy is not in discontinuance or settlement status. You can choose a 5% or 10% annual withdrawal rate with monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual payouts, subject to policy conditions. Partial withdrawals made in the two years before death may reduce the sum assured used for calculating the death benefit.

How many critical illnesses does the Platinum variant cover?

The Platinum variant of the Param Suraksha ABSLI comprehensive critical illness rider covers 64 critical illnesses, subject to the rider's definitions and conditions.

How accurate is the ABSLI Param Suraksha calculator?

There is no official Param Suraksha calculator. However, the policy brochure provides illustrations based on assumed returns. The actual maturity returns depend on market performance, fund selection, charges, withdrawals, and policy duration.

What Sum Assured multiple can a 30-year-old realistically get?

The available multiple depends on factors such as entry age, policy term, product rules, and underwriting. Param Suraksha offers a multiple ranging from 7× to 30×, but 30× is not automatically available to every customer.

Is the maturity benefit tax-free?

Not necessarily. ULIP maturity benefits are tax-exempt only if the applicable conditions under Section 11, read with Schedule II, formerly Section 10(10D), are met. For ULIPs issued on or after February 1, 2021, this includes the ₹2.5 lakh aggregate annual premium limit across eligible ULIPs and the prescribed premium-to-sum assured ratio. Always verify the policy's tax eligibility and prevailing tax rules before investing. Death benefits are generally tax-exempt, subject to applicable provisions.
