Overview
Health insurance is usually cheapest when you’re young and healthy. The longer you wait, the more medical checks you'll need, and any condition diagnosed before purchase may be treated as pre-existing.
Oriental Youth Eco Care, offered by The Oriental Insurance Company Limited, one of India’s oldest public sector insurers, is designed for this stage of life.
It offers coverage of up to ₹1 crore and a shorter 1-year waiting period for pre-existing diseases. However, the plan also comes with trade-offs like room rent limits and no restoration benefit, which you should factor in before deciding.
In this review, we break down what the plan covers, how it is priced, and how it compares with private health insurance options.
What Is Oriental Youth Eco Care?
Oriental Youth Eco Care is a health insurance plan for young adults aged 18 to 45 years. It covers medical expenses if you or your family members require hospitalization due to an illness or accident.
Plan Variants:
- Basic Plan: Covers core hospitalization expenses, including room rent, ICU fees, doctor charges, pre- and post-hospitalization, ambulance fees, AYUSH, and modern treatments.
- Premium Plan: Includes everything in the Basic Plan plus 4 built-in benefits like daily hospital cash allowance, medical second opinion, maternity expenses, and ART, including In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
Coverage Structures:
- Individual: Every member gets a dedicated, separate Sum Insured (SI).
- Floater: A single SI is shared across the whole family.
- Floater-With-Floater: You can split your family into two floaters under one policy. It requires a minimum of four members, with at least two members in each floater. Parent-child cross-combinations are not allowed. Both floaters must be in the same plan variant, and the higher sum insured must be assigned to the parents.
Key Features, Coverage, and Riders Under Oriental Youth Eco Care

Hospitalization Cover
Covers hospital stays of at least 24 consecutive hours for illness or accidents, including doctor fees, surgery, medicines, implants, and diagnostics. Pre- and post-hospitalization expenses are covered for 45 days before admission and 90 days after discharge for the same condition. The plan also includes day-care procedures that don’t require a 24-hour stay.
Room Rent and ICU Limits
For plans with SI up to ₹5 lakh, room rent is capped at 1% of the SI (maximum ₹5,000 per day) and ICU at ₹10,000 per day. For SI between ₹7 and ₹10 lakh, room rent is capped at ₹10,000 per day and ICU at ₹20,000 per day. For SI above ₹10 lakh, both room rent and ICU are covered at actual costs with no daily limits.
Bonuses and Health Benefits
You get a 10% no-claim bonus each year, up to 100% of your base cover. Alternatively, you can opt for a 2% premium discount at renewal. The plan also offers health check-ups after 3 claim-free years on a reimbursement basis and an additional 10% cover for listed critical illnesses (for SI ₹10 lakh and above, after a 2-year wait).
Additional Benefits in Premium Plan
Maternity cover is available after both spouses complete 2 years of continuous coverage and is limited to two deliveries or lawful terminations over a lifetime. The payout per event is capped at ₹50,000 (SI ₹10 lakh or below), ₹75,000 (₹15–₹25 lakh), and ₹1 lakh (above ₹25 lakh). ART/IVF has a 3-year waiting period for both spouses and is covered up to ₹2 lakh within the base SI. It is limited to one claim for one child during the policy lifetime and is not available if the couple already has a living child. It also includes daily hospital cash and second medical opinion benefits, both with defined sub-limits.
No Restoration
This plan does not offer restoration of SI. Once your cover is exhausted in a policy year, no additional coverage is available until renewal.
Key Treatment Limits
Ditto’s Take: We recommend comprehensive health insurance plans that come with no room rent caps, no disease-wise sub-limits, no co-payment, and unlimited restoration.
Oriental Youth Eco Care falls short on several of these fronts. For SI options of ₹10 lakh or below, room rent limits apply, exceeding which can lead to proportionate deductions across your entire hospital bill.
It also doesn’t offer a restoration benefit, meaning if you exhaust your cover in one claim, the base SI isn’t automatically restored. Also, its bonus structure is fairly basic, with slower accumulation than many modern plans like HDFC ERGO Optima Secure+ and Care Supreme.

Oriental Insurance: Performance Metrics
Note: This information is sourced from the IRDAI annual reports and Oriental Insurance’s public disclosures. To explore more such data, please refer to Ditto Data Lab.
Key Insights:
- High ICR: Oriental’s 3-year average ICR is 111.54%, meaning it pays more in claims than it earns in premiums. This can put financial pressure on the insurer and may lead to higher premium hikes over time. This is also common with public sector insurers.
- Inconsistent Performance: While the insurer has a decent claim settlement ratio and relatively low complaint numbers, its performance metrics have been inconsistent in recent years.
Pros and Cons of the Oriental Youth Eco Care
Pros:
- Short PED Waiting Period: Pre-existing conditions are covered after 1 year, which is faster than most plans, subject to underwriting.
- Maternity and IVF Cover (Premium Plan): Covers maternity expenses up to ₹1 lakh and IVF/ART treatments up to ₹2 lakh, subject to waiting periods.
- Floater-With-Floater Structure: Allows coverage across multiple members under a shared structure, offering some flexibility in how the SI is used.
- No Mandatory Co-Payment: Standard claims do not require you to pay a fixed percentage out of pocket.
Cons:
- Limited Entry Age: Individuals above 45 years are not eligible.
- Room Rent Caps: Plans with ₹10 lakh or lower have room rent limits, which can lead to proportionate deductions across the entire bill.
- No Restoration Benefit: Once your SI is exhausted, there is no automatic refill within the same policy year.
- Treatment Sub-Limits: Caps apply to key areas like cataract, modern treatments, and domiciliary care, especially on lower SIs.
- TPA-Led Claims: Claims are handled via TPAs, which can slow down processing. Policyholders can opt out of TPA servicing for a 5.5% premium discount.

Conclusion
Oriental Youth Eco Care offers a relatively short 1-year waiting period for pre-existing diseases, high coverage up to ₹1 crore, and maternity and IVF benefits in the Premium variant.
But the limits are hard to ignore. For SI of ₹10 lakh or below, room rent caps can cut into your payout, and opting for an SI above ₹10 lakh is the only way to avoid this. More importantly, there's no restoration benefit at any SI level, so one large claim can exhaust your cover for the rest of the year. Add its dependence on a TPA for claims, and this is a tough trade-off for a plan aimed at younger buyers, who typically qualify for the most comprehensive coverage on the market.
Overall, this plan works if you specifically want a public-sector insurer and are willing to live with these trade-offs. If you'd rather avoid them, a private insurer with restoration benefits and stronger claims servicing is the better fit.
