Star Health Young Star Neo: Review & Premiums [2026]

Overview

The Star Health Young Star Neo plan is an indemnity-based health insurance policy designed for adults aged 18 to 40 and dependent children aged 91 days to 25 years. It is available as an individual or family floater policy and runs on Star Health's Super Star and Star Flexi plans.

Key Features & Coverage

  • Sum Insured: ₹10 lakh to unlimited, for up to 2 adults and 4 children.
  • Premium Lock: Freeze Your Age holds your entry-age premium until your first claim or age 55. Time Travel extends this benefit.
  • Restoration: Unlimited restoration in the same policy year.
  • Cumulative Bonus: 50% per claim-free year, up to 100%.
  • Waiting Periods: 30 days initial, 2 years for specific illnesses, and 3 years for pre-existing diseases.

Important Considerations

  • Room rent is capped at a single private AC room.
  • Many strong features are add-ons that raise your premium.

Most young Indians don't claim on their health insurance for years, yet their premium keeps rising with age. Why? Because insurers price you by your age, not by how healthy you've been.

That is exactly what Star Health Young Star Neo tries to fix. With Freeze Your Age, your premium stays locked at your entry-age rate until your first claim or your 55th birthday. Add the Time Travel rider, and even after that first claim, your premium age resets to your entry age plus one instead of jumping to your actual age. So if you buy at 30 and claim at 40, you could still be charged as if you were 31.

But does that make it a smart buy? In this article, we'll walk you through the features, riders, waiting periods, sample premiums, the claim process, and how Star Health performs on claims.

What Is the Star Health Young Star Neo Plan?

Young Star Neo is a marketing name, not a separate insurance product. It runs on two Star Health products. These are the Super Star plan and the Star Flexi plan.

Star Health Young Star Neo: Key Features, Riders and Coverage

Because Neo borrows from Super Star and Star Flexi, it is more flexible than most plans for young buyers. Here is what matters most.

Key Features

Background Image

01

Restoration

Your base SI gets restored unlimited times in the same policy year for any illness. Restoration is triggered on partial exhaustion too. This helps with multiple hospitalizations in the same year.

02

Cumulative Bonus

You get 50% extra cover for each claim-free year, up to 100% of the base SI. The bonus will be reduced by 50% if you make a claim.

03

Modern Treatments

The plan covers listed advanced procedures, including Robotic Surgery, Immunotherapy, Deep Brain Stimulation, Stem Cell Therapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, and more up to the SI.

04

Ambulance Coverage

Road ambulance is covered up to the SI, provided the hospitalization claim is accepted under the policy. Air ambulance is covered up to ₹5 lakh per policy year.

05

Freeze Your Age

Your premium is based on your age when you bought the policy, and it won't change as you get older. This holds until either your first inpatient, daycare, or AYUSH claim is paid, or you reach 55, whichever happens first. After that, Star Health charges the premium for your current age. Keep in mind that premiums can still change for other reasons, such as insurer-wide price revisions, regulatory changes, and rising medical costs.

06

Time Travel

This add-on works together with Freeze Your Age. Normally, once your first eligible claim is paid, your premium switches to your actual age. With Time Travel, your premium age resets to your entry age plus one at renewal, so you keep paying a younger-age premium for longer. For example, say you bought the policy at 30 and made your first claim at 40. Without Time Travel, you'd be charged the premium for your actual age of around 40. With it, you'd be charged as if you were 31.

07

Premium Waiver

If the policyholder, who is also covered under the plan, is diagnosed with a listed critical illness or dies in an accident, you won't have to pay the premium for the following policy year. The policy stays active for the rest of your family at no extra cost.

08

Health Booster

For every 7 consecutive claim-free years, Star Health adds another 100% of your base sum insured to your cover. This is separate from the yearly cumulative bonus, so the two add up over time. Long-term policyholders end up with a much larger cover.

09

Star THRIVE

This is a rewards program that gives you THRIVE Coins for healthy habits like regular exercise or wellness activities. You can redeem the coins for health and Outpatient Department (OPD) services, wellness marketplace benefits, or savings on your renewal premium.

Riders and Add-Ons

    • Preventive Health Checkup: You get a yearly health check-up if you're 18 or older. You can choose between two test packages, A or B.
    • Consumables Cover: This covers hospital consumables like gloves, masks, syringes, and other disposable items that are usually excluded from claims. It applies to all four lists (I to IV) of such items, up to your SI.
    • Star OPD (Premier): This gives you a cashless wallet for outpatient care, such as doctor visits, that doesn't require hospital admission. The wallet size ranges from 1x to 5x your base premium, up to a maximum of ₹1 lakh. Pre-Existing Diseases (PED) are covered after a 12-month waiting period.
    • Mamta (Women Wellness Care): This gives women access to wellness services through digital platforms, such as online consultations and health programs. The exact services depend on plan variants, so check the policy details for what's included.
    • Limitless Loyalty Bonus: Your sum insured increases by 100% at every renewal, whether or not you made a claim. There is no upper limit, so your cover keeps growing the longer you stay with the policy.

Conclusion

Young Star Neo is a youth-friendly label on top of Super Star and Star Flexi, not a brand new plan. You get flexible cover, unlimited restoration, a bonus that grows up to 100%, and optional riders for faster pre-existing disease cover.

The trade-off is the insurer. Star Health's 88.63% claim settlement ratio and high complaint volume mean claims need extra care.

If you're buying health insurance for the first time, compare Young Star Neo with plans from other insurers, and look beyond the premium. Ditto's guide to the best health insurance plans in India can help.

If you already have a Star Health policy, switching to Young Star Neo just to save money may not work in your favor. Sticking with an established base plan like Super Star or Comprehensive usually makes more sense, since good coverage matters more than short-term savings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Star Health Young Star Neo a good health insurance plan for young adults?

It suits healthy buyers under 40 who want a steady premium. Freeze Your Age locks your entry-age rate until your first claim or age 55, and Time Travel resets your premium age to entry age plus one after a claim. You also get unlimited restoration and a cumulative bonus of up to 100%. However, room rent is capped at a single private AC room, and the claim settlement ratio is below average.

How is Star Health Young Star Neo different from the original Star Health Young Star policy?

Young Star Neo is a marketing name, not a separate product. It runs on Star Health's Super Star and Star Flexi plans, so its features come from those base policies. There is also a Neo Corporate version for employers and group buyers. Neo is the retail version for individuals and families, so check the correct brochure before comparing benefits and premiums.

What is the waiting period for pre-existing diseases under Star Health Young Star Neo?

The pre-existing disease waiting period is 3 years. Other waiting periods are 30 days initially (accidents are covered from day 1) and 2 years for specific illnesses like hernia or cataract. The Quick Shield add-on can cut the wait for common conditions to 31 days. Note that the Star OPD rider has its own 12-month PED waiting period for outpatient care.

Can a single young adult buy Star Young Star health insurance Neo, or is it only for couples?

A single adult can buy it. The plan is available as an individual plan or a family floater covering up to 2 adults and 4 dependent children. Adults can enter between 18 and 40 years. For example, the indicative premium for a 25-year-old individual is ₹8,552 for a ₹10 lakh sum insured (Delhi), so a floater isn't required.

What is Star Health's claim settlement ratio, and does it affect Young Star Neo claims?

Star Health's claim settlement ratio is 88.63% for FY 2024-26, below the industry average of 92.02%. It also gets 54.04 complaints per 10,000 claims versus 29.35 for the industry. The plan's terms don't change, but you may need to take more care with claims. Keep your documents ready and use cashless claims at Star Health's 14,000+ network hospitals where possible.

Can I upgrade from Star Health Young Star Neo to a comprehensive plan later?

Under health insurance portability, you can move to another plan or insurer and keep credit for completed waiting periods, subject to underwriting. If you plan to port, do it at least 45-60 days before renewal so that you have ample time to decide.

What is the Freeze Your Age feature in Star Health Young Star Neo Plan?

Freeze Your Age locks your premium at the age you bought the policy, so it doesn't rise with age at renewal. This lasts until your first paid inpatient, daycare, or AYUSH claim, or until you turn 55, whichever comes first. After that, Star Health charges your actual age. Premiums can still change due to insurer-wide repricing, regulations, and medical inflation.
