Overview
What makes the National Young India Mediclaim Plus policy different from a standard health insurance plan?
Apart from hospitalization cover, it includes benefits for maternity, infertility treatment, personal accidents, and certain adventure sports, with sum insured options up to ₹25 lakh. But there are trade-offs too, including room restrictions, treatment-specific sub-limits, and a limited restoration benefit.
So, is the National Young India Mediclaim Plus policy worth considering? This review looks at its features, premiums, exclusions, insurer performance, and key drawbacks.
What Is the National Young India Mediclaim Plus Policy?
The Young India Mediclaim Plus Policy is both an indemnity and benefit-based health insurance plan from National Insurance, a Government of India-owned general insurer established in 1906.
Key Details of National Young India Mediclaim Plus
Other Built-In Benefits
The policy also includes a few standard hospitalization benefits with specific limits and conditions:

Cumulative Bonus
The basic sum insured increases by 10% for every claim-free year, up to a maximum increase of 40%.
Restoration Benefit
The basic sum insured is restored once per policy year after the available cover is exhausted. The restored amount can be used only for a subsequent hospitalization and cannot be used for certain specified critical illnesses.
Ambulance Cover
Road ambulance expenses are covered up to ₹2,000 per policy year, while air ambulance expenses are covered up to ₹50,000 per policy year.
Key Features of National Young India Mediclaim Plus
National Young India Mediclaim Plus includes a few benefits that are unusual for a standard hospitalization policy, but several have waiting periods, sub-limits, or other conditions.
Maternity, Newborn, Surrogacy, and Infertility Cover
The policy covers maternity, surrogacy, and infertility treatment after a 24-month waiting period.
Important Limits on Maternity and Infertility Benefits
- Maternity covers eligible childbirth, cesarean delivery, lawful medical termination of pregnancy, and eligible pre- and post-natal hospitalization expenses.
- Only one admissible delivery or termination claim is allowed under the policy and its renewals.
- Infertility treatment is limited to one claim during the insured person’s lifetime.
- Infertility diagnostic tests and storage of sperm, eggs, or embryos are not covered.
Personal Accident Cover
The policy includes an inbuilt personal accident benefit for accidental death, permanent total disability, and specified permanent partial disabilities.
- Under an individual policy, the benefit applies separately to each insured person.
- Under a family floater, it applies only to the proposer.
- The maximum benefit is linked to the basic sum insured.
Cover for Non-Professional Adventure Sports
Another unusual feature is coverage for hospitalization arising from non-professional participation in hazardous or adventure sports.
The benefit is limited to 25% of the sum insured. Professional participation in activities such as mountaineering, rafting, motor racing, scuba diving, and similar sports remains excluded.
Domestic Travel Cover
The policy also includes limited domestic travel benefits for eligible trips made through common carriers such as flights, trains, and buses.
For example, it pays ₹1,000 for a flight delay of more than 12 hours and up to ₹2,000 for repatriation of mortal remains. Similar small benefits are available for trip cancellation, airline cancellation, loss of checked-in baggage, and compassionate allowance.
The limits are modest, so treat this as an additional benefit rather than a substitute for dedicated travel insurance. You can check the complete list of benefits and conditions in the National Young India Mediclaim Plus prospectus.
Modern Treatments
National Young India Mediclaim Plus covers 12 specified modern treatments, including robotic surgery, oral chemotherapy, immunotherapy, deep brain stimulation, and stereotactic radiosurgery.
However, these treatments come with separate limits. For a ₹15 lakh or ₹25 lakh sum insured, some examples are:
For the complete list of modern treatments, their limits, and what each limit applies to, you can refer to the National Young India Mediclaim Plus policy wording.
Optional Waiting-Period Waiver
For an additional premium, National Insurance lets eligible buyers waive the waiting period for pre-existing diabetes and/or hypertension from the policy start date.
The waiver does not cover related complications of diabetes or hypertension that already exist when the policy is issued.
Non-Medical Expenses Cover
Consumables and other eligible non-medical expenses are not covered by default. However, you can opt for an add-on that covers eligible non-medical expenses up to 10% of the basic sum insured, within the existing sum insured.

Conclusion
National Young India Mediclaim Plus is a fairly feature-rich option for younger buyers, with benefits such as maternity, infertility treatment, personal accident cover, adventure-sports coverage, and competitive premiums. It is also a meaningful step up from some of National Insurance Co’s more basic health plans.
However, the policy has important limitations, including restricted room eligibility, a relatively weak restoration benefit, treatment-specific sub-limits, a 25% zone-based co-payment in certain cases, and a smaller cashless hospital network. National Insurance Co’s high ICR and complaint levels are additional concerns.
So, while the plan can work for buyers who specifically prefer National Insurance Co or find its pricing attractive, it would not be our first choice for primary long-term health insurance. Before buying, compare it with the best health insurance plans in India to see how it stacks up against stronger alternatives.
