Quick Overview
HDFC Ergo’s flagship health plan, Optima Secure, offers a set of optional riders. Each targets a specific gap in the base plan and comes at an additional premium. This article breaks down each rider in simple language so you can decide what to add, what to skip, and why.
Key HDFC Ergo Optima Secure Riders
Optima Secure offers several riders, but not all are worth adding. Here's a breakdown of each one.
Unlimited Restoration
Restoration means your base sum insured gets refilled after a claim is made in the same policy year. By default, Optima Secure provides restoration once a year. The add-on offers unlimited refills, making it helpful for multiple hospitalizations within the same year. It works on partial exhaustion, covering both same and different illnesses.
Premium For Common Profiles
Note: Premiums are calculated for a ₹15 lakh base policy for healthy individuals in Delhi (110010). Prices are indicative and may change based on age, pincode, and any add-ons chosen.
Our Recommendation: The cost is about 0.5% of your base premiums. So, we strongly recommend taking it when you buy the policy.
ABCD Chronic Care
The HDFC Ergo ABCD rider reduces the waiting period for listed pre-existing conditions from 3 years to 30 days. ABCD stands for Asthma, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, and Diabetes (Type 2). Once you add this rider, the insurer doesn't apply loading (additional premiums) for these conditions.
Drawbacks
- Once added, this add-on cannot be removed.
- If you increase the base sum insured, the 30-day waiting period applies freshly to these conditions for the increased sum insured.
Our Take: If you have one of these conditions and need immediate coverage, this rider is worth considering. However, if you already have a corporate policy and can manage the waiting periods, it’s better to skip this.
Limitless
The HDFC Ergo limitless rider provides unlimited coverage for a specified number of claims in a policy year. It covers inpatient hospitalization, daycare treatments, and inpatient AYUSH treatments.
Drawbacks
- You only use it limited times, but pay the premium every year.
- Once you remove this rider, you can't add it back.
- The waiting periods from your base plan still apply when the rider is added later on.
Premium Comparison
Note: The premiums are calculated for a ₹15 lakh sum insured, including the limitless and unlimited restoration add-on. The profiles are of healthy individuals residing in Delhi (110010).
Bottom Line: The add-on offers peace of mind for worst-case scenarios, especially with lower cover amounts. But if you have a higher base cover, consider whether the premium is worth it for one-time use. The upfront cost may look small, but health insurance premiums keep increasing.
Parenthood
The HDFC Ergo Parenthood rider provides maternity coverage. It has 5 covers, all sharing a single maternity sum insured. It is one of the few maternity riders that goes beyond delivery costs and includes fertility treatments, along with worldwide coverage.
Maternity Coverage Limits With Premiums
Note: The premiums for maternity coverage remain constant, irrespective of age and location.
Two things worth knowing:
- This rider requires at least one female insured member aged 18 or older.
- Claims made for maternity do not reduce your base policy sum insured.
Refer to the infographic below for details of coverage:

Drawbacks
- Any expenses for the newborn after delivery are excluded.
- There is a waiting period of 24 months from the date this rider is added.
- Donor eggs, donor sperm, surrogacy arrangements, and voluntary termination of pregnancy are not covered.
Our Take: If you're planning for a child and need help with delivery costs, this rider may be useful. But if you have a corporate policy, it's best to use that. Saving up is also better than paying high premiums for maternity coverage.
Optima Wellbeing
The HDFC ERGO Optima Wellbeing rider covers Outpatient Department (OPD) benefits. These are covered only in select cities and through HDFC Ergo’s network providers.
- You get unlimited in-person consultations with general physicians at partnered facilities, on a cashless basis. You also get tele-consultations with specialists online, starting from the 31st day of the policy.
- You get up to 50% off on diagnostic services, including free home sample collection.
- The add-on offers up to 20% off on medicines at partner pharmacies and wellness sessions.
- Apart from the in-clinic consultations, all benefits are available through the HDFC here app.
Note: The add-on does not vary by age or location. It is only impacted by policy type.
Drawbacks
- This rider is available in select metro cities.
- All benefits are cashless only. There is no option for reimbursement.
Our Take: If you have regular doctor visits and live in the select cities, you can consider adding this. If not, better to skip it.
Serious Illness
The Serious Illness rider provides 100% of your base sum insured if any insured member is diagnosed with any of the 9 listed conditions. This can be used after the base sum insured is exhausted.
The conditions include cancer, open chest Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), kidney failure, heart attack, open heart surgery, major organ transplant, multiple sclerosis, paralysis, and stroke.
Ditto’s Advice: The add-on doesn’t add much value, since any medically necessary hospitalization is already covered by default after the applicable waiting periods in your base policy.

Conclusion
The HDFC Ergo Optima Secure riders fill gaps in the base plan. They work best when your base sum insured is sufficient, ideally between ₹15 lakh and ₹25 lakh.
Remember, each rider raises your annual premium, and some riders stay with you permanently. This means you'll pay that extra cost for the life of the policy.
Start by choosing the right sum insured, then add only the riders that solve a real gap for you. For the overall policy details, you can check out the HDFC Ergo Optima Secure review.
