Travel Insurance for Malaysia: Cover, Cost & Rules

Overview

Travel insurance for Malaysia is not mandatory for Indian tourists in 2026. Malaysia dropped its COVID-era insurance requirement on May 1, 2022, and today's entry checklist does not ask for proof of cover.

Key Details and Coverage

  • Medical Benefits: Covers cashless hospitalization, emergency medical evacuation, and repatriation.
  • Travel Inconveniences: Covers flight delays, trip cancellations, lost checked-in baggage, and lost passports.
  • Entry Requirements: Indian citizens get visa-free entry for up to 30 days and must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC).

As per the Ministry of Tourism, Malaysia welcomed 1.5 million Indian visitors in 2025, up 14.6% from 1.3 million the year before, and over 600,000 more arrived between January and May 2026 alone.

With more than 190 India-Malaysia flights running every week, booking the trip is easy. Most travelers get stuck deciding on insurance, mainly because much of what shows up online is outdated.

This guide covers what's actually mandatory, what a good plan should include, premium numbers, and how claims work if something goes wrong.

Is Travel Insurance for Malaysia Mandatory for Indian Travelers?

Travel insurance for Malaysia from India is not mandatory in 2026. Malaysia required travel insurance with COVID cover for short-term visitors during the pandemic, but removed that requirement on May 1, 2022.

Malaysia's current entry checklist for Indian passport holders, last updated in August 2026, asks for:

    • Passport valid for at least 6 months.
    • A confirmed return flight ticket.
    • A confirmed hotel or accommodation booking.
    • Completed Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC).
    • Immigration may also ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay.

What Travel Insurance for Malaysia Actually Covers

Ditto's Insight: A high headline sum insured means little if you don't check the age-based sub-limits buried in the brochure.

Malaysia Entry Rules Indians Must Meet: Visa-Free Stay and the MDAC

Indian passport holders can travel to Malaysia visa-free until December 31, 2026, for stays of up to 30 days, covering tourism, business, social, or transit visits.

Visa-free does not mean paperwork-free. Every Indian traveler must still complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC), a separate requirement from the visa exemption.

MDAC Essentials:

    • It's a free, mandatory online form, not a visa and not an insurance requirement.
    • Complete it within the three-day window before arriving in Malaysia, including your arrival date.
    • Submit it only at the official portal
    • You'll need your passport details, flight information, and accommodation address.

Please Note:

    • MDAC is an arrival declaration, not a visa.
    • The 30-day visa-free window covers business, tourism, social, and transit only. It doesn't cover employment or study, which require their own visa or pass.

How Much Cover You Need for Malaysia and Sample Premiums by Trip Length

There's no legal minimum requirement for travel insurance Malaysia. Here’s a rough estimate of coverage for different profiles.

Traveler ProfileSensible Medical Cover
Young, healthy traveler on a short holidayAt least USD 50,000
Most travelers wanting a comfortable bufferUSD 100,000
Senior traveler or longer trip or with PEDsUSD 200,000 or higher, with sub-limits checked

Malaysian private hospitals aren't Singapore-expensive, but costs still add up fast. Sunway Medical Centre charges RM 285 a day for a standard single room and RM 530 a day for ICU care, around ₹6,750 and ₹12,550.

Please Note: These are room charges only. Doctor's fees, tests, procedures, and medicines are billed separately. A 6% service tax has also been applied to healthcare services for non-Malaysians since July 2025.

Here is a sample of how premiums look for the HDFC ERGO Explorer Platinum plan under its Asia (excluding Japan) region.

Sample premium from HDFC ERGO Explorer Platinum plan under its Asia (excluding Japan) region. The premiums are calculated for a single-trip policy for a base sum insured of USD 100,000

Note: The premiums are indicative and for a single-trip policy, considering the following parameters:

    • Base Sum Insured: USD 100,000
    • No optional covers, loadings, discounts, or add-ons
    • Premiums are in INR and exclusive of taxes

Here's what to check before you buy travel health insurance Malaysia:

Background Image

01

Medical Expense Limits

Ensure emergency medical coverage is at least USD 50,000, and check the deductible on top of that.

02

Age-Related Sub-Limits

Look for separate, lower medical caps for travelers over 55, since these can apply even on a high headline sum insured.

03

Pre-Existing Disease (PED) Terms

Check the look-back period and whether PED cover is excluded entirely or available only for life-threatening complications.

04

Evacuation and Repatriation

Confirm the policy covers a medical flight back to India and repatriation of remains, not just local hospital treatment.

05

Cashless Assistance Network

Verify whether your insurer has a direct billing arrangement with Malaysian hospitals, since cashless treatment isn't automatic everywhere.

06

Trip Cancellation and Curtailment

Check if you get reimbursed for canceling flights or hotels due to sudden illness, a family emergency, or similar covered events.

07

Travel Delays and Baggage

Look for fixed payouts for missed connections, long flight delays, and lost or delayed luggage.

08

Adventure Sports Cover

Confirm whether activities like scuba diving or jungle trekking need a separate rider, since most standard plans exclude them.

09

Currency and Payout Method

Check whether reimbursements are paid in INR or USD, since the conversion rate used can quietly shrink what you receive.

010

Family or Group Discounts

Some insurers price a family floater lower per head than individual plans, so ask before booking separately.

011

Renewal or Extension Rules

If your trip might run longer than planned, check whether the policy can be extended from abroad or needs to be bought fresh.

012

COVID-19 and Infectious Disease Cover

Confirm whether pandemic-related treatment or a mandated quarantine stay is built in or needs an add-on.

Exclusions and Pre-Existing Condition Rules That Cause Claim Rejections

Most standard travel insurance plans do not cover PEDs by default. If you have a pre-existing condition like diabetes or hypertension, you need to specifically buy a plan with a PED add-on. Without it, any treatment linked to your existing condition will not be covered, no matter how high your headline sum insured is.

Some plans do make an exception for an acute onset of a pre-existing condition, meaning a sudden, unexpected flare-up rather than routine management. This is covered only up to a point and subject to the policy's specific terms.

Other Common Exclusions to Check:

    • Routine or planned treatment, or traveling specifically to get medical care abroad.
    • Pre-existing diseases, unless the policy explicitly covers life-threatening emergencies or you have bought a PED add-on.
    • Injuries connected to alcohol or drug use.
    • Self-inflicted injuries or attempted suicide.
    • Cosmetic treatment and non-emergency dental work.
    • Adventure activities you did not declare or that are excluded by the policy.
    • Losses that happen while you are breaking local law.
    • War, military activity, and nuclear or radioactive events.

How to File a Travel Insurance Claim From Malaysia

Medical Emergency: Call your insurer's assistance number and ask about cashless approval. Keep every medical report, bill, and discharge summary. Don't assume the bill is settled directly, since some hospitals require upfront payment. Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur, for example, only offers direct billing with a valid Letter of Guarantee, and only if the hospital already has a credit arrangement with your insurer.

Lost Baggage or Passport: Get a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) from the airline for baggage issues, or file a police report if your passport is lost or stolen. Keep your tags, boarding pass, and replacement receipts. For a lost passport, you'll also need to contact the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur for replacement documents.

Flight Delays: Get written proof of the delay from the airline, and save your ticket and receipts for any extra expenses. Most policies pay out only after the delay crosses a minimum threshold, so check that limit in your plan.

Conclusion

Malaysia won't stop you at immigration for skipping travel insurance, and hasn't required it since its COVID-era rule ended in 2022. But its hospitals will still bill you in full, and a headline sum insured doesn't tell you what a policy will actually pay out.

Ditto's Take: Check the deductible, the age-based sub-limits, and the PED terms before comparing premiums. That's where real coverage gaps hide.

Please Note: Ditto does not currently help with standalone travel insurance. We do help with health insurance and term life insurance, the two policies that protect you well beyond a single trip. See our guides on the best health insurance plans in India and the best term insurance plans in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my existing Indian health insurance policy work in Malaysia, or do I need separate travel cover?

Most India-only health policies do not cover treatment abroad, but some global health plans do. Check your policy's geographical scope and overseas-treatment terms. Even if your health policy covers Malaysia, travel insurance can add benefits such as trip cancellation, baggage loss, passport loss, and evacuation that your health policy may not include. Some plans offer global coverage options, like the HDFC ERGO Global plan, but they come with multiple coverage limits.

Does travel insurance for Malaysia cover treatment at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur?

Yes, most travel health insurance Malaysia plans cover hospitalization, doctor visits, and emergency treatment at private hospitals in Kuala Lumpur. Cashless treatment depends on the hospital having a prior tie-up with your insurer, so confirm this before you travel.

Is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card the same thing as travel insurance?

No, the MDAC is a free, mandatory arrival form, completely separate from travel insurance. Filing it does not replace Malaysia travel insurance. You still need to buy a policy separately if you want medical and trip-related cover during your stay.

How much medical sum insured is enough for a week-long Malaysia trip from India?

For a healthy adult on a short trip, USD 50,000 in medical cover is a reasonable starting point. When comparing the best travel insurance for Malaysia, also check the deductible and any age-based sub-limits, not just the headline sum insured.

Does travel insurance for Malaysia cover scuba diving, jungle trekking or other adventure activities?

Not by default. Most standard travel insurance for Malaysia plans exclude adventure activities like scuba diving or trekking unless you add a specific rider. Confirm this coverage in writing before your trip, since claims for undeclared activities are routinely rejected.

Can I buy travel insurance for Malaysia after I have already landed in the country?

No, not for the Indian travel policies discussed here. HDFC ERGO, Tata AIG and Care require you to buy the policy before leaving India. If you already have an active policy while abroad, check whether your insurer permits an extension, which is different from buying a fresh policy.

Will travel insurance for Malaysia pay out if my flight to Kuala Lumpur is canceled or delayed?

It can, depending on the cause and your policy. Most plans include flight delay and trip cancellation benefits, but only after a minimum delay threshold or for specified covered reasons. Check your Malaysia travel insurance policy for the exact triggers, since not every disruption qualifies for a payout.
