Overview
You buy health insurance to protect yourself from the financial burden of hospitalization. But even after a claim is approved, you may still have to pay certain expenses out of pocket.
Niva Bupa Safeguard Plus is an optional add-on that offers additional protection by covering certain out-of-pocket expenses, increasing your sum insured, and protecting eligible Booster+ benefits. But the benefits available under Safeguard Plus can vary depending on the health insurance plan you choose.
In this guide, we explain what Niva Bupa Safeguard Plus covers, how it works across different plans, how much it costs, and whether it can help reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.
What Is Safeguard Plus in Niva Bupa?
Niva Bupa Safeguard Plus is an optional add-on you can add to eligible Niva Bupa health insurance plans. You can't buy it separately as it's only available when you select it with the base plan. The add-on follows the terms, conditions, and exclusions of the base policy.
One of its key benefits is coverage for specified consumables and non-payable items that are ordinarily excluded from a standard hospitalization claim. These can include items such as gloves, masks, syringes, cannulas, sutures, and nebulizer kits, provided they are included in the applicable Lists I, II, III, and IV of Annexure I. Safeguard+ can therefore reduce the portion of an admissible hospital bill that you would otherwise have to pay out of pocket.
The exact benefits available under Safeguard+ vary across Niva Bupa plans. The complete list of items covered under Safeguard+ is available in the Niva Bupa Safeguard prospectus.
Real Claim Scenario
How Claim Safeguard, Booster Safeguard, and Sum Insured Safeguard Work
Safeguard+ has three components, each designed to provide a different type of protection under the policy.
Claim Safeguard+
Claim Safeguard+ covers the non-payable items specified in Lists I, II, III, and IV of Annexure I, subject to the policy terms. These can include consumables and non-medical items such as gloves, masks, syringes, cannulas, sutures, and nebulizer kits, which may otherwise be excluded from a standard hospitalization claim.
However, the Reasonable and Customary Charges clause still applies. This means the insurer can limit payment to an amount it considers reasonable for the same treatment or service in that location. So, Safeguard+ does not automatically make an unusually high charge payable.
Booster Safeguard+
Booster Safeguard+ protects the accumulated Booster+ if the total claim amount during a policy year is up to ₹1 lakh.
Booster+ allows unused base sum insured to carry forward and accumulate over the years, subject to the maximum limit applicable to the policy variant and entry age.
For example, if a policyholder has accumulated Booster+ and makes an admissible claim of ₹75,000 during the policy year, the accumulated Booster+ remains protected under this benefit, subject to the policy terms.
Sum Insured Safeguard+
Sum Insured Safeguard+ increases the base sum insured cumulatively at renewal based on the inflation rate for the previous year.
The inflation rate is calculated using the average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the entire calendar year, as published by the Central Statistical Organization (CSO).

Which Niva Bupa Plans Offer Safeguard Plus, and How It Differs From Safeguard
Safeguard Plus is available with select Niva Bupa health insurance plans, but benefits can vary by plan.
Since Safeguard+ benefits can differ across plans, check the policy wording for your specific plan before purchasing the add-on.
Safeguard vs. Safeguard+
Safeguard and Safeguard+ offer similar benefits, but differ in coverage.
Note: You can choose either Safeguard or Safeguard+ based on availability and plan.
Now that we know the difference between the two options, let's look at the premiums.
Note: A denotes adult and C denotes child in this table. We have calculated these premiums for a ₹15 lakh sum insured for healthy individuals residing in Delhi (110010). Your actual premium can vary depending on age, location, underwriting, and medical history.
Ditto's Observation: For a ₹15 lakh sum insured, the Safeguard add-on costs 7.5% of the base premium, while Safeguard+ costs 12.5%. This makes Safeguard+ our preferred choice over Safeguard because of its enhanced features, while the additional premium is relatively small.
