Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana for Teachers vs. Private Health Insurance: Do You Still Need Cover?

The Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana provides eligible teachers and their families with cashless healthcare benefits through empaneled hospitals. While this is a valuable government initiative, a personal health insurance policy can provide additional and long-term financial protection.

    • Higher Financial Protection: The Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana provides coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per eligible family per year. This amount can be insufficient for expensive surgeries, prolonged hospitalizations, or multiple hospitalizations in a year. A personal health insurance policy can provide a higher sum insured and features such as automatic restoration or cumulative bonuses, depending on the policy.
    • Coverage Limited to Inpatient Treatment: The scheme covers eligible inpatient treatments, so it does not cover healthcare expenses that do not involve hospitalization. A personal health insurance policy can provide broader coverage for eligible pre- and post-hospitalization, outpatient department coverage, daycare, and other medical expenses, depending on the policy terms.
    • More Choice of Hospitals: The scheme is limited to hospitals empaneled under the SACHIS. A personal health insurance policy can provide access to a wider network of hospitals, depending on the insurer and policy.
    • Protection Against Rising Healthcare Costs: Medical treatment costs continue to increase, particularly for specialized procedures and advanced treatments. A ₹5 lakh cover provides limited financial protection as healthcare expenses rise. A higher sum insured under a personal health insurance policy provides an additional financial cushion against medical inflation.
    • Lifelong and Customizable Coverage: The government scheme is linked to eligibility under the applicable education department rules. A personal health insurance policy provides lifelong, renewable coverage and lets you choose the sum insured and policy features based on your healthcare needs and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which teachers are eligible for cashless health insurance under the UP Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana?

The scheme covers eligible teachers and education-sector personnel under basic education, secondary education, and higher education. This includes basic education council teachers, teachers in eligible aided and self-financed institutions, Shiksha Mitras, upper-primary instructors, eligible Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya staff, and specified higher education teaching and non-teaching staff. Eligible dependent family members are also covered, subject to the applicable department rules.

How much cashless treatment does the Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana actually pay for each year?

The Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana provides up to ₹5 lakh per eligible family per year for covered inpatient treatment. The scheme is government-funded, with ₹3,000 allocated per eligible teacher or staff member each year, which the beneficiary does not pay. Treatment is provided according to the applicable packages and rates notified under AB-PMJAY and the National Health Authority, subject to the scheme rules.

Can a teacher already covered under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY also claim under the Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana?

No. Individuals already covered under another Central or State government-funded health scheme are not eligible for the Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana. This includes beneficiaries covered under AB-PMJAY and the Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Abhiyan, as specified in the applicable government orders. Therefore, a teacher already covered under AB-PMJAY cannot claim benefits under both schemes.

How do teachers get the digital health card needed for cashless treatment under the Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana?

Eligible teachers must apply for the Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Health Card through their education department's online portal. The application requires employment and personal details, then asks you to add eligible dependents and submit the application for departmental verification. Once the application is approved and verification is completed, the State Health Card can be accessed through the respective portal and used to access cashless treatment at participating hospitals.

Are retired teachers and Shiksha Mitras covered under the Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana?

Shiksha Mitras are included under the scheme's basic education component, along with their eligible dependent family members. The eligibility details in the applicable government order listed in this guide do not identify retired teachers as a separate eligible category. Therefore, retired teachers should not be treated as covered under the scheme's eligibility categories.

Does Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana cover treatment at private hospitals or only government hospitals?

The Mukhyamantri Shikshak Cashless Chikitsa Yojana covers cashless inpatient treatment at both government hospitals and private hospitals. However, the hospital must be empaneled with the SACHIS. Treatment is provided under the applicable packages and rates notified by AB-PMJAY and the National Health Authority. The State Health Card is used to access cashless treatment at participating hospitals.

Is ₹5 lakh of cashless cover enough for a teacher's family, or is a private health policy still needed?

The scheme provides up to ₹5 lakh per eligible family per year for covered inpatient treatment. This provides useful financial protection, but expensive surgeries, prolonged hospitalizations, or multiple hospitalizations can exceed this amount. The scheme also focuses on eligible inpatient treatment. If affordable, a personal health insurance policy with lifelong renewability, a higher sum insured, and customizable coverage can provide an additional layer of financial protection.
