Quick Overview
Healthcare expenses can place a heavy burden on families, especially when serious illnesses require extended treatment. Recognizing this challenge, the Rajasthan government launched the Chiranjeevi Yojana, now renamed the Mukhyamantri Ayushman Arogya Yojana (MAAY), to ensure that households across the state can access hospital care without financial distress. Over time, the scheme has expanded in scope, aligning with national health programs to provide a broader safety net.
In 2024, the state increased its annual coverage limit to ₹25 lakh per family, making MAAY one of India’s most generous state-funded health protection programs.
In this article, you’ll get a clear understanding of MAAY, including its benefits, eligibility rules, application process, coverage features, and how it compares to private health insurance.

Key Features of Mukhyamantri Ayushman Arogya Yojana
High Cashless Cover
MAAY provides up to ₹25 lakh per family per year for inpatient treatment, one of the highest covers offered by any state-run health scheme in India.
No Age or Family Size Limit
Every member of an enrolled family is covered, regardless of age or the number of members. Children below 1 year are also covered, even if their names haven't yet been added to the Jan Aadhaar family card.
Affordable Coverage
Priority groups are enrolled at zero cost, and the Rajasthan government pays the full premium. All other permanent residents of Rajasthan can enroll for just ₹850 per year, which is 50% of the total premium; the state subsidizes the rest.
Linked Accident Cover (MADBY)
Enrolled families receive accident benefits, ₹5 lakh for accidental death (up to ₹10 lakh for multiple deaths) alongside disability payouts including ₹3 lakh for permanent total disability and ₹1.5 lakh for partial permanent disability.
Jan Aadhaar-linked Enrollment
The entire scheme is mapped to your Jan Aadhaar family card. Any member additions, removals, or splits need to be updated on Jan Aadhaar first. MAAY records sync automatically after verification.
Inclusions and Exclusions of Mukhyamantri Ayushman Arogya Yojana
Note: MAAY covers over 1,798 medical packages and procedures. The package also covers tests, medicines, and consultations related to the admitted illness: 5 days before hospitalization and 15 days after discharge.

Documents Required To Apply For MAAY
To enroll under the Mukhyamantri Ayushman Arogya Yojana (MAAY), applicants must submit basic identification and eligibility documents.
Required documents include:
- Jan Aadhaar Card (mandatory family ID for enrollment).
- Aadhaar Card for e-KYC of the head of family and members more than 5 years of age.
- Government ID proof (such as Aadhaar, voter ID, or PAN).
- Proof of residence (like ration card or a recent utility bill).
- Category-specific documents for priority groups (NFSA ration card, farmer landholding certificate, worker ID, EWS certificate).

MAAY Vs Private Insurance: Is It Enough on Its Own?
MAAY is a strong safety net, especially for priority families who get ₹25 lakh of cashless cover at no cost. It eases the burden of major medical expenses but it comes with real limitations: cashless treatment works only at empaneled hospitals, package rates set a ceiling on what gets paid, and scheme rules are subject to state budget decisions and policy changes, factors entirely outside your control.
A private health plan works independently of government budgets or political shifts. It lets you choose your hospital anywhere in India, set your own sum insured, and build cover that stays with you regardless of which scheme is running in your state.
Treat MAAY as a solid first layer of protection, not your only one. If you want coverage that's flexible, portable, and truly comprehensive, a personal health plan is still worth having alongside it. Conclusion
Rajasthan residents have access to one of India's most generous state health schemes, but generous doesn't always mean comprehensive. MAAY gives decent coverage, yet network restrictions, package ceilings, and dependence on state budgets mean there will always be gaps a government scheme simply can't fill.
A private health plan gives you coverage that's truly yours, independent of state budgets, political cycles, or empanelment lists. A smarter approach? Use MAAY as your foundation, and build on top of it with a private plan that fills the gaps.
