Quick Review

The ICICI Activate Booster is a Super Top-Up health insurance plan designed to provide an additional layer of financial protection. This plan "activates" once your medical expenses cross a pre-decided limit called a deductible. The plan is available in two variants: Plan A and Plan B. It is ideal for people who want to increase their total health insurance coverage without paying the high costs of a primary policy.

You buy a health insurance policy thinking you’re well protected, until a serious hospitalization shows you otherwise. Suddenly, your “adequate” sum insured doesn’t feel adequate at all.

This gap between expected coverage and actual medical costs is why Super Top-Up plans are gaining popularity. ICICI Lombard Activate Booster Super Top-up is one such plan that promises large coverage at a relatively low premium. But before you rely on it, it’s important to understand how it works, what it covers, its eligibility criteria, exclusions, and even the insurer’s performance metrics. In this guide, we break it all down, so you know exactly where this plan fits in your health insurance strategy.

How Does ICICI Activate Booster Super Top Up Work?

The ICICI Lombard Activate Booster is a modern Super Top-up health insurance plan designed to provide high coverage at a low premium by working on a "deductible" basis. Unlike a standard Top-up, it considers the aggregate (total) of all medical expenses in a policy year to cross the deductible, rather than just a single claim.

Example:

    • Scenario A: You have a Super Top-Up with a ₹5 lakh deductible. Your first hospital bill in April is ₹3 lakhs. Since your total bills are still below ₹5 lakhs, the super top-up plan pays nothing.
    • Scenario B: Later in October, you have another hospital bill of ₹6 lakhs. Your total medical bills for the year now add up to ₹9 lakhs. Since this is ₹4 lakhs more than the deductible, the Super Top-Up pays ₹4 lakhs.

Should You Buy ICICI Activate Booster Super Top Up Plan: Ditto’s Take

ICICI Activate Booster is a comprehensive and customizable super top-up plan that works well for increasing your overall health cover at a relatively low cost. It can be a good option if you already have a strong base health insurance policy (ideally from ICICI itself for smoother claims processing) or if you set the deductible at an amount you’re comfortable paying out of pocket during a medical emergency.

That said, insurer performance matters. While ICICI Lombard offers innovative features and broad coverage, its CSR remains a point of concern. We hope to see improvements in claims consistency and will continue to monitor its performance. For now, although ICICI Lombard remains one of our partner insurers, it is not among our actively recommended options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy ICICI Activate Booster without a base health insurance policy?

Yes, you can buy ICICI Activate Booster even without a base health insurance policy. In this case, the plan will activate only after your total medical expenses in a policy year cross the chosen deductible. Until then, you will need to pay expenses out of pocket. Once the deductible is crossed, the Super Top-Up will cover eligible costs up to the sum insured.

I already have a corporate health insurance policy. Can I buy a Super Top-Up on top of it?

Yes. Your corporate policy can cover medical expenses up to its limit, and once the total expenses exceed the chosen deductible, the Super Top-Up can take over. However, you should not rely solely on corporate insurance, since the employer is the master policyholder (the entity that owns and controls the policy) and coverage typically ends when you leave the job.

Does the Super Top-Up cover multiple hospitalizations in a year or only one claim?

ICICI Activate Booster covers multiple hospitalizations in the same policy year. It works on a cumulative basis, meaning once the total medical expenses across all hospitalizations cross the deductible, the policy pays for subsequent eligible expenses up to the sum insured.

I want to buy only a Super Top-Up and no base plan. Is that advisable?

You can buy only a Super Top-Up, but it is advisable only if you are comfortable paying medical expenses up to the deductible from your own savings or another source. A Super Top-Up is designed to supplement a base policy, not replace it. Without a base plan, you take on higher out-of-pocket risk during medical emergencies.

Is there a way to remove or waive the deductible in a Super Top-Up plan?

The deductible is a key feature of all Super Top-Up plans, including ICICI Activate Booster. However, it offers a Waiver of Deductible feature where if the plan is purchased before age 50 and renewed continuously, the plan can later convert into a deductible-free base policy when the eldest member is 55–65. This is not an immediate rider and works only as a future conversion benefit.
