Quick Overview
HDFC ERGO has launched Optima Secure+ on April 2, 2026, a plan that focuses more on features. This is a signal that the insurer is no longer hiding behind the 'trusted name' card. They're now playing the feature card, joining peers like Care and ICICI Lombard.
In this article, we cover the key features, add-ons, premiums, how the plan is different from Optima Secure, and who this plan actually makes sense for.

Key Features of HDFC ERGO Optima Secure+
1) Secure Benefit: 2X Coverage from Day 1
The moment your policy starts, your effective cover doubles. Buying a ₹10 lakh plan means you're covered for ₹20 lakh from day 1.
2) Infinite Benefit: Coverage That Never Stops Growing
Every year at renewal, 100% of your base sum insured is added to your total cover, and there's no limit on how high it can go. More importantly, this happens irrespective of whether you've made a claim. For example, a ₹10 lakh base plan, after 10 years, provides a coverage of ₹1.2 crore (₹10 lakh base + ₹10 lakh secure benefit + ₹1 crore bonus).
3) Unlimited Restoration: Built In
If your sum insured is exhausted partially or completely during a hospitalization, it's automatically restored to 100%. This can be done multiple times within the same policy year for both related and unrelated illnesses.
4) No Hidden Restrictions
No co-payment, no room rent cap, and no disease wise sub-limits. You're covered for the actual bill amount, without sharing any portion with the insurer or worrying about a specific condition being partially covered.
5) Pre- and Post-Hospitalization Coverage
Coverage extends 60 days before hospital admission and 180 days after discharge. This covers diagnostic tests before surgery and physiotherapy, medicines, and tests after discharge, which otherwise can add up significantly.
6) Protect Benefit: Consumables Covered
Non-medical expenses like gloves, masks, syringes, and nebulizer kits are usually excluded from coverage. The in-built Protect Benefit covers 68 such listed consumables, which can be a meaningful difference in high-value claims.

Major Add-ons Offered by HDFC ERGO Optima Secure+
Serious Illness Booster
This is a brand-new add-on that provides an additional 100% of the sum insured specifically for 9 critical illnesses, covering actual medical expenses after the base sum is exhausted. The 9 conditions include cancer, heart attack, kidney failure requiring dialysis, open heart surgery, major organ transplant, stroke, multiple sclerosis, permanent paralysis, and open chest Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG).
Limitless
For plans with a base sum insured between ₹10 lakh and ₹50 lakh, this add-on allows one claim of unlimited value in the policy lifetime. On the other hand, for plans with a base sum insured of ₹50 lakh or above, you get two such unlimited claims.
ABCD Chronic Care
This add-on reduces the waiting period for Asthma, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, and Diabetes Type 2 (ABCD) from 3 years to just 30 days. If any of these are pre-existing conditions, this add-on becomes worth evaluating. One important thing to remember is that if you opt for the add-on, you have to pay for it for the entire policy lifetime.
Parenthood
Covers maternity expenses for up to 2 deliveries, pre- and post-natal care within 180 days of childbirth, embryo freezing, and up to 2 In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) cycles. Premiums start at ₹14,000, depending on the maternity sum insured opted for. It requires at least one female aged 18 or older on the policy. However, newborn cover is not included.
Optima Wellbeing
Covers unlimited doctor visits (in-clinic with general physicians and online with specialists), free home lab sample collection, wellness sessions, and up to 50% discounts on tests and medicines. This is available only in select cities.

How is Optima Secure+ Different from Optima Secure?
The Bottom Line: In year 10, an Optima Secure customer with a ₹10 lakh base plan has a maximum coverage of ₹40 lakh (bonus + secure benefit + restore). Whereas, an Optima Secure+ customer with the same base cover has ₹1.2 crore. That's not a small gap, and it's entirely due to the removal of the bonus ceiling.

Ditto’s Take
HDFC ERGO Optima Secure+ is a strong offering from the insurer. Some meaningful features include the Infinite Benefit (which was not offered by Optima Secure), 2X cover from day 1, and unlimited restoration (built in rather than as an add-on).
A few things to keep in mind:
- Entry age is capped at age 60, so this isn't an option for older parents.
- There's no wellness or fitness-linked discount, something competitors like Care Supreme and Aditya Birla Activ One Max have already introduced. Given how impactful those premium reductions can be, it's a feature we'd like to see in the future.
- This is a newly launched plan. While the insurer must maintain stable features and pricing during the initial period, IRDAI mandates a performance review after three financial years, which can lead to changes in the features or premiums.
What looks good today may look different by year 2. We're yet to see what the stable version of this plan looks like.
If you're under 35 and looking for a long-term plan, Optima Secure+ is worth serious consideration. But if you'd rather go with something tried and tested, check out our guide to the best health insurance plans in India.
