Quick Overview
Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva was first launched in 2007 by Dr Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy as Rajiv Aarogyasri. Over the years, its name has changed with different governments in power. In 2014, it was renamed NTR Aarogya Seva, later called NTR Vaidya Seva. In 2019, it was changed back to Dr. YSR Aarogyasri.
Most recently, in July 2024, the Andhra Pradesh government restored the name to Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva, reflecting the current administration’s preference while continuing the same goal of providing cashless healthcare.

Inclusions and Exclusions of Dr YSR Aarogyasri
Dr YSR Aarogyasri vs Private Insurance: Is It Enough on Its Own?
Dr YSR Aarogyasri offers cashless treatment with no premium contribution, helping families manage major hospital expenses. However, public healthcare infrastructure in certain regions may not always be adequate, which limits hospital access, facilities, and long-term continuity in certain areas.
With rising medical inflation, even a ₹25 lakh cover under a government scheme can be exhausted in cases of prolonged ICU stays, multiple surgeries, organ transplants, or advanced cancer treatments in private hospitals.
In contrast, private insurers like HDFC ERGO General Insurance provide broader coverage, stronger hospital networks, and policy continuity independent of government changes.
Before choosing between a government health scheme and a private health insurance policy, it’s important to understand how they differ in terms of coverage, long-term reliability and more. Here’s a simple side-by-side comparison to help you decide:

Conclusion
Dr YSR Aarogyasri provides essential financial protection to low-income families in Andhra Pradesh, ensuring cashless access to quality healthcare. For more comprehensive coverage, private health insurance can complement the scheme’s benefits effectively, as government schemes depend heavily on political will, public funding, and predefined limits.
However, if you are looking for a health plan from insurers with established track records, we recommend comprehensive health insurance plans like HDFC ERGO Optima Secure and Care Supreme, which align with your long-term goals.
